Hi all,
I would like to know how you update your handicap in the US??
In my country the only way is to play in a tournament. In other country such as germany is enough that you play a round with a pro (normally your golf teacher).
How is it in the USA??

Any round you play that conforms to USGA rules is supposed to be posted. It could be a tournament or you could be playing all by yourself on a Wednesday afternoon.

Here, I am a member of my local club's handicapping group. They are a member of the Tennessee Golf Association and USGA. My club allows online posting through GHIN.COM. I can post 9 or 18 hole scores. We update every 2 weeks. I post several scores that I've played by myself. Anyone wanting to play with me for a little peer review is more than welcome.

At my course, they have a Ghin computer set up and you log in and enter your scores. Then, they send your scores in and about every 2 weeks you get an updated sticker for your handicap card.

I had a question very similar to this. Someone in this forum said something to the effect that they updated their handicap when they got their new clubs. I took this as they basically restarted their handicap. My problem is I started tracking mine when I shot high 90s and played all the time. Now I shoot mid 80s, but I hardly ever play any more. So basically I was wondering if I should reset it to more accurately reflect my scores, or just keep posting scores and very slowly watch it go down.

Do not reset your handicap - just keep playing and posting as you should and everything will be taken care of.

Nope. Your handicap is essentially based on a percentage of what you have the potential to shoot....or something like that

. I'm sure you could still shoot a round in the 90's....

Ok thanks for the responses guys. Yes, I still do occasionally shoot in the 90s .

I always keep my real score with real rules, because I just got my handicap info this summer and I needed to keep scores.

I don't know how often my club updates it but I don't want to see it because I have not been playing well.

    • Day 39: did top golf for an hour with the family. It was fun but also not really like real golf at all. Also did some mirror work - working on the backswing stuff mostly.
    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
