Ill start off by saying I normally shoot 101-103 consistently. My problem is that I can hit my 7i-PW easily and I can hit my 3 and 4 hybrid IMO pretty well for a high handicapper (normally straight or with a nice draw). I can also hit my 5i pretty decent. The problem is that I cannot hit my 6i to save my life. Is it all in my head? I keep the ball with ALL my irons in the middle of my stance. Unfortunatly I dont have a video to show you all. Its gotten to the point now that I take my 6i and only my 6i at the range and that is all I practice. I will say that when I do the drill where I take my normal stance and then put my right foot back that I hit the 6i nice and straight. Maybe I should just put my right foot back on the course...LOL!

Unless there is something fundamentally wrong with the club (I.E. the lie angle has become altered) then the problem is all in your head, if you can hit your 5 iron and can hit your 7 iron there is no logical reason for you to hit your 6 iron poorly.

Just go out there and practise hitting that 6 iron, also get it checked out by a club fitter, just in case something has been changed in the make up of the club.

Sound like it is in your head. You are just anticipating hitting a bad shot on the course. Unlike the range, you have one chance to get it right. You have the yips with your 6 iron. I have no idea how to solve the problem.

Well Im going to the range with my buddy tonight so perhaps I can get a video up for you guys to take a look tonight.

I have an idea that may work if this problem is all in you head. Go to the range and before you go mix up all your irons in your bag and place a piece of black electrical tape over the number on each club so you have no idea what iron you are hitting. You will have a clue by the length and loft but it might work.

I never thought of that but it is a beautiful idea! Thanks TCC I'll try that tonight.

I guess for now don't even bring your 6i to the course. Just practice with it, you can take a little off your swing with a 5i and land the ball in the same area.

6i is my dead club, too. Not sure why. I never make good contact with it. 7 & 8 are money, I've gotten better with my 5...6 is usually short and slicing hard. I've been working on it at the range and it is improving, but I am not confident with it yet.

pertend the 6 iron is a 9 iron at the range. I hit my 6 iron with the same swing as my 9 iron so it should work.

I have a similar problem, I can hit my 7-sw as straight as an arrow with relative consistancy but my 5&6 iron are a different story, I consistantly hit them about five-ten yards right of target.

I'm not sure why, when I find out I will let you know!

Maybe it is in your setup? For me the 6 is where I start to move the ball up for more of a sweep and less of a dig. It's kinda right in the middle of that transition zone. I feel quite sure I should have the 5 up a little in my stance, and I hit down hard on the 7. But the 6 is kinda in between. For what it's worth, I have this problem with a 5. Everybody has their favorite and least favorite club. Sometimes it is due to a club building anomly, one club has a lighter swingweight or a more upright lie than the rest of the set.

What's wrong with your 6-iron in term of ball flight? Did you slice it? Fade? Fat or thin it? Or else?

To know if it's in your head, what I normally would do is to bring your friend to the range with you and have him randomly hand out one of the clubs (5, 6 & 7 irons) to you without you knowing which is which. Just so you know and give you something to think of, 6-iron isn't too much of a difference compared to 7-iron which you can hit easily. Trick your brain into thinking of hitting one lesser club. Keep that in mind and I'm sure you'll hit 6-iron the same way you hit your 7-iron. Confidence is key. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the tip guys. So we have a winner! The electric tape worked! HAHAHA Its incredible how the mind plays tricks on you. After about 40 balls I took the tape off my clubs and went from PW-5. Im very happy with the results. I know I still have a lot to work on as far as my swing but at least I dont have my mind playing tricks on me now. Thanks TCC and everyone else for your help.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
