I was with a buddy of mine that has a I-phone this weekend. The video was poor, but it was the first time I've seen my swing.

At any rate I don't stand square to the ball at address like I do with my irons. I stand very open, and very behind the ball. I also have a terrible slice, so that started making sense right away. I squared up and took note of my left arm and wrist angle and did my best to keep that rigid and in form, the result was more distance less of a slice, but it did still slice off at the end.

When looking at the second swing it was obvious to me that I was bringing the club inside at the take away and then trying to get it on plane to strike the ball. Also I noticed I bring the club head back about shoulder high and don't take a complete swing.

Is there a way to correct this that you would reccomend to me, or should I just take up a lesson with a pro?

First things first. You need to make sure your setup is good. No good drives come from poor setups.

Feet slightly wider than shoulder width. Shoulders parallel to the target line and the ball is inside about an inch inside your left heel. Your hands should be hanging very loosely in front of the inside of your front thigh. Hanging them loose elimanates tension which destroys a golf swing. When you set your clubface, be sure that its pointing exactly where you want to go. Its interesting how often golfers dont actually pay attention to how they sole their clubs. The face of the driver must be perpendicular with the target line. Opening it up a couple degrees will cause the ball too fade or slice if its open too much.

Thats really the first step. If you can get that video posted...it would help certainly be helpful

Try this because it worked for me. It's sorta weird at first but I hit it perfect every time.

Goto YouTube and put this in the search "Golf Tips from Golf link".

Are you standing too close to the ball and jamming yourself? I was having that problem.

Great advice. I will work on that at my range trip this week. I'll see what I can do to get my video up.

Instead of focusing on striking the back of the ball, focus on hitting the inside of the ball.

Tee the ball up with the logo facing directly to the back, then roate the ball so the logo is slightly on the inside towards you. Focus on hitting the logo. This will help groove an inside/out path for your downswing.

Alignment is just something you have to work on....on the range, in your living room, wherever. But as for the swing, an instructor recently showed me that no good swing goes inside/ inside. Most amateurs who try taking it back inside end up coming over the top. A proper take away that's slightly more upright allows you the room to drop the club to the inside. My suggestion: get off here and seek some instruction. Someone who uses video would be best.

That is some excellent advice right there.

I really love this tip.....can't wait to hit the range and give it a whirl. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna try this in T-minus eight hours at league play. Now for me I slice to the right, with the logo in toward me (slightly) in my mind it would feel like I'm hitting it towards the right. Do I still address the ball the same way? Sorry to be such a newb, but this idea sounds great I just want to make sure I do it right.

Shoulder alignment is more important then feet and hip alignment since the shoulders will set the path that the arms will move on. Correcting shoulder alignment may correct path. The ball may still curve away to the right (due to grip or arm rotational motion), but it will be more likely to start on line after correcting alignment (and/or path).

What do you mean by you attempted to attempted to keep rigid? You shouldn't need to keep anything stiff in order to make a sound swing.

    • As a supporter of the European team even though I chose to live in the US, this is kind of good news. I'm pretty close to Bethpage, but won't be going at these prices. Neither will the crazy drunk NY sports fans who would have made this a very difficult place to play as a Euro. The tickets will go to the city types who are entertaining clients and don't care about the money. Many of them are going to sit there and watch, not get all raucous. I am not dumb enough to believe that this is going to be like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for the Euros, but I think it will be significantly more subdued as a result of the prices. Even at $250 I would probably have been watching on the TV anyway so no real skin in the game.
    • First, it is on free TV. NBC is free to anyone with an antenna, and is on almost any TV in the U.S. with a minimal amount of effort. Charging "a bargain price" would be incredibly dumb. They charged $750 and the event sold out almost immediately. You could better argue they should have charged MORE, not less. What happens if you charge less: ticket scalpers buy up even more of the tickets because they see value: if tickets were $250, they'd clearly have sold for $1k or more on the secondary market. That's tremendous value. Fans would end up paying the same or more, or just not being able to go. Sure, a few who happened to be online at the precise moment on a fast connection and didn't fumble with their credit cards might have gotten tickets for $250, but the secondary market and ticket brokers would have scooped up the vast majority with automated processes and bots and scripts, then re-sold them later on. This way, fans get to purchase the tickets, and the PGA is earning that revenue, not the secondary ticket brokers. Econ 101. Supply and Demand. Nope.
