What is the widest lake you would dare attempt to hit over?

Whenever I hear people talk about how long they can hit the ball, I can never make out if they mean in the air or are including the roll (and is that a level roll or roll downhill) or if that is a confident shot, or is it one shot in every 10.

Anyway, I perfer to ask it another way. What is the widest lake you would dare to hit over?

You aren't going to attempt to hit over a lake a distance you can't hit at a reasonable amount of time, and it takes the question of roll away.

If you we'er to tee up at the edge of a lake, how wide would the lake have to be before you said "I don't have a reasonable chance of getting to the other side."

I would feel confident getting over a 235 yard lake with no wind 9/10 times. Once we get to 245-250 I think I could only get 1 out of 10 over.

I cleared a lake's edge at about 240-250 on Sunday - barely, with some tail wind. Anything longer and the percentages would drop off fast.

There's one hole where I play that has a 235-yard carry from the blue tees across a lake and a bunker. I don't generally try to carry it, but instead take the longer route around the lake instead of across. So my answer is probably around 210-220.

A course near me called Fore Lakes has a island type green that is surrounded by water with a walk way bridge that goes out to it. The shortest spot to carry it is 175yds, I've gone in and I've gone on.

I would put my limit at about a 260 carry off the tee. I could do a little more, but depending on the situation I probalby wouldn't try it.

From the fairway, my limit would be about 210-215. If I felt really comfortable and there was little trouble, I would go as much as 230.

Are we talking straight away no wind? Then I'm cutting mine off at 240 giving myself about 20 yards of error room.

Ain't it something when you put water in the fairway,the big drive numbers go way down.This is a good way to ask the same old question that gets asked on here a lot and you see some wild numbers....My answer is about like some of the other guys 200'ish

Our 18th hoel, they jacked the tees way up, so its only a 300 yard hole, with a big lake down the left.
if you choose to try and hit towards the green, its a 250 yard carry, maybe more, and gets progressively shorter the farther right you go. I hit a really high drive, and of decent length for my age, so i feel confident going over 240 yards of the pond. I will, if the round is not going very well or i really want a birdie, ill try and put one between the front bunkers, about 280 out, but its an all-out, swing so hard the club whips off your back on the follow through. Oh so much fun. And if i make decent contact, it goes where i want it to.

So i guess, max would be 265. Preferred, 245.

Never.

Changing to a shag-quality ball is an invitation to hit it in the water. Where's your confidence? To the original question, under normal conditions, I'm comfortable carrying it 260 off a tee with a driver. I'm not sure I've ever run across a situation off a tee where a forced carry was more than 260. Of course I've had the "option" to cut a ravine off the tee. #16 at my home course is one of these. The further left you dare to go, the longer the carry but the shorter the second shot. I'll drive it 260 uphill, no roll, to the middle of the fairway leaving 100y +/-5y to the middle. (I leave room for about 40 yards of error - short). If you aim further left, you'll bring a bunker into play (253 to reach but 273 to clear, leaving 75y to the center). It's simply not worth the 25 yards.

175. I'd feel comfortable with that. Anything around 200 would be pushing my luck because I'm generally a low-ball type of hitter.

I hit low and wouldn't want more than 200. There is a short par 4 at my course with a creek at 220. It's downhill and the creek is only about 15 yards wide. I could mostly likely one hop it everytime out. But I always pull a 4 hybrid, hit short and with the downhill roll I still have a wedge or short iron in my hands hitting 2 not 3.

Worsh psychological move ever, nothing but a great way to put negative thoughts in your head. My partner did this yesterday in our league and well, hit it in the water.

260 for me. 265 and i say ehh, should be no problem and i decide the risk/reward. 270 and were talking if its a scarmble hell ya if its a tournament, im probably not risking it.
