My golf equipment delima

I am only 16 so I don't have much money to spend on golf clubs. I have a okay driver and 3 and 5 wood, my putter is decent along with my sandwedge.

My irons are graphite Diawas given to me by my uncle they are old and hard to hit.

I am looking for irons that are easy to hit, durable and are able to play with as I get better. I know the X20's are great but they are a bit too pricy for me. I was looking to keep it under $400. I would love to have a custom fitting but those clubs are like double my price range.

how much are you particularly looking to spend?

taylormade r7 irons are very solid clubs. You can get a set of last years models for under 400 on ebay

you can demo clubs at any major golf retailer.

I'd recommend spending the 30 dollars or whatever it is to get fitted for clubs. Then take those specs and find something used on ebay.

golfdiscount.com has them for $300.

eBay is a great place for good new/used discontinued irons, you should be able to get a top name brand set between $200-$400. Go to a driving range and see if they have any old individual demo irons you can try out, that is the best way to demo a wide variety of irons new and old. Kevin

I think I will save up for a nice set or go get custom fit then based on that try to score a deal somewhere!

I have been told by one pro I could handle steel and another I can't. So I would like to improve some more then go to steel.

In your price range you can get quite a bit. Adams and Cobras have always been the most forgiving irons IMHO. And you can get quite a few sets from them in that price range.

Anything wrong with Craigslist? You'd probably be able to meet someone at a driving range so you could try them out first; you might want to promise to give them some gas money if you didn't make the purchase.

Sorry to say this but - unless your body stature is beyond norm - imo there is absolutly no need to spent even 1 $ more on fitting when you are a beginner esp. if you are on a budget. I spent way to much on equipment as beginner thinking it would improve my game - it doesnt - only practice does...

Look at the WilsonStaff equipment. All the stuff from 2006 (Pi5, Di6, Ci6) is now on sale. I got my Ci6's for $200 brand new. WilsonStaff is a really good buy, and saves you some money for other equipment.

Too bad no big-name, major winning tour players play WilsonStaff... ... or do they??

I like to think of WilsonStaff as one of golf gear's best kept secrets. Let's hope they don't go the route of Nike and start hiking up prices just because all the other manufacturers are doing it.

I would definitely recommend buying a set off ebay, something like the 2007 Cobra FP's. You can get a full older model set that's new or close to new for under $250.

I agree with the others about ebay. I got a set of nike slingshot 4d irons new for $280 when those irons are 400-500 in retail shops. One word of advise when using ebay is be patient, dont jump on the first deal you see. Also do a search for auctions with a best offer option. A lot of times you can get a great deal on those. Make sure you check feedback and if it seems like too good of a deal it probably is. Good Luck!

With your budget and handicap I would strongly suggest an older set of Callaways. X18,16,14 or 12s. The X12s still stand up as an awesome begginger club and can be had for about $200. I loved my X12s! I don't think there has been huge improvements in this line over the years. Seems like they got it right the first time.

When you get ready to resale and upgrade as you handicap drops, you will get most of that money back in resale. I'd suggest graphite for now but go with what you like. This would leave you $200 to spend on a quality putter and/or sandwege.

I'm in the same dilemma as you and I'm split between Adams a3 hybrid irons and the Wilson Staff Ci7s.

Most places will actually fit you for free with purchase, so I would recommend getting fitted even if you think you know your specs.
