Since the grip is the only connection we have to the club, I have decided to work on mine. There are times when I actually will feel a loss of control at the top of the backswing.

One thing after reading the 5 Fundamentals is that my right thumb and index finger should be relatively tight. That has helped a lot.

However, I was reading an article about having the pressure on the club through the last 3 fingers of each hand. I tried it out and the club feels very stable in the backswing and I feel more awareness of the club throughout the swing.

Where do you focus your grip pressure when gripping the club?

This may seem odd, but I don't focus on my grip pressure at all. I set the grip deep into my fingers and just close my hands around the club. At that point it almost seems like its locked in. On a good day with my swing, it feels like the club is an extention of my arms and there is no effort to hold the club.

So this may not be sound advice, but I really feel the grip most at the base of my middle and ring fingers of both hands. And I feel my right thumb pressing against my right index finger at their bases. This kinda makes a triangle that supports the club at the top.

I don't use any pressure at all with my right hand. Last three fingers of the left hand is all I use. I have issues with my right hand trying to get too much involved in the swing, hence the grip pressure. I also use a double overlap, ala Jim Furyk. Helps a great deal with my issue.

I don't think much about my left hand, but my right hand has pressure only on the middle and ring fingers. I'll actually extend my pointer and pinkey and hit some balls on occasion to work on this.

I use a Vardon overlap grip, 100% neutral. Righty example.

Left hand: Hold in all four fingers. Not thinking about holding any tighter or looser than the others. Use just enough pressure so that at the top of my swing my fingers don't come open (an old bad habit of mine.)

Right hand: Pinky just sort of lies on top of other hand, no pressure. Index finger out in trigger fashion and thumb slightly offset towards clubface. No pressure from their either. Two middle fingers have pressure on grip, but it is just enough so I feel I have control.

Having a drumming backgroup (where gripping the sticks too tightly kills your drumming) I had to work my way from too light a grip to a tighter one.

Hogan has a drill where he leaves his right hand thumb and index finger completely off the club, which explains what he thinks about the pressure needed.

It is a good drill. If you feel you can't make a proper swing doing that, it means you are using your right hand too much to steer the club.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
