Club distances are probably it. Driver average is probably #1. I mean, I'm capable of hitting it big (hit two the other day that crossed the 300 yard threshold) but AVERAGE? I probably average 250-260. Mostly because I hit more stray drives than I do bombs. Yet I hear about these 15-18 handicappers who are averaging 275-285.....right!

I love the haters.

You can't measure your drive from the scorecard. There are too many variables in the equation for that to have any meaning at all. I've demonstrated that to many of my friends too often for me to ever fall for that fallacy. It depends on what part of the tee box the card measurement was made from, how close to the center of the fairway your ball is, and how honest they are with the card yardages.

Courses seem to have ego problems too... I've seen too many of them where the tee to green measurements are quite fanciful. On my home course, the 13th hole is a par 3 that shows 216 yards on the card from the back tees to the center of the green. Unfortunately, the only way it measures 216 is if the tee is placed on the back of the 11th hole blue tee box. From the correct tee box the hole can measure at the absolute farthest just 195. In your case, that 10th hole at Eagle Bend in KS is a dogleg right.... you just blew your 300 yards there. Unless you are measuring your shots with a laser or a dependable GPS, then you really have no idea how far you are hitting it. The odds are that like most golfers, you aren't nearly as long as you think you are. I had the same awakening when I bought my Bushnell and found that I'm only pretty average. But being of average length while still being better than average in scoring keeps me happy. BTW, I have hit 300+ yard drives many times in my life, but not on a regular basis, and usually with some environmental help. Like a 530 yard (card number - note that the actual yardages don't add up to that) par 5 where I played it driver (330 yards), 8I (170 yards) and holed the 10 foot putt.... all with a 30+ mph tailwind. And that was NOT with current technology (1987 TM Tour Driver and Titleist Tour Balata 100 comp ball), I did that nearly 20 years ago.

The PGA Tour pros, the best players in the world, average on 287. That's an average of all the players. The best avg. 315, the worst 261.

It's amazing how long some people (even in here) avg. with their driver.

I've thought hard about this trying to come up with a rival #1 answer and I just can't do it.

You really need a witness for a hole in one. Or put it another way, someone could verify your claim of an ace by asking your playing partners. But your drive distance is less verifiable. The others in your group are not paying that much attention, in particular if you are significantly further than they are. All they know is you out drove them.

I "measure" myself on the same hole each time I play. It is straight without any tee box elevation. It is slightly downhills so I am giving myself a break. My drive ends up near the 200 yd marker. Good drives go past and poor drives are short (or drives into the wind). So I glace at this marker to give myself a relative measure of my drive each round. I have been able to determine the effect of wind conditions and the like on my drives. Of course my drives are no where near 300 yds.

hi,

this thread has been quite sensible given the topic, these usually turn into slagging matches so i am impressed!

One thing i would like to say that is a bit of a pet peeve is that whenever i read the threads on power - you can bet that the second someone claims to drive 300 plus (which i do) 1 or 2 post later someone will slag of the hitter and say i only hit 240 but average 71 or similar which i find even more nausiating - why should someone believe one claim and not the other?

Fact is hitting big drives makes the game easier - as far as most lied about accomplishment in sport - got to be fishing

I like the suggestion of the bet for $100 for every yard over 300 average to $5 per yard under good way to work out who can do it and who cant.

one other thing - its all conditions so 300 yards where i am cold and wet is a lot harder than a hotter climate or at altitude so you are comparing apples with oranges.

I would suggest if you can maintain a 120mph plus swing you can realistically consider that you hit 300yards on average assuming you connect well

by the way if you are in the uk make sure your club is signed up for the uk longdriveseries, ty

I would, respectfully, disagree with that ... hitting fairways and greens makes the game easier ... The fact is that everyone has at least one club in their bag that they know they can nail 90% of the time, and almost eveyone has a gap in their bag

somewhere . Distance dosen't, IMHO, make this game easier. I see the old guys out there hitting 7w/7w/7w/Putt on a par 4 ... where I could hit D/9i/LW/Putt/Putt ... I think that Distance could have to opposit effect on someone's game. Those big bombers I see on my local courses don't take the time to actually think thier way around the course. They figure that they can just bomb away and score well - in some cases that is true, but in most, it's not. Just remember, "With great power comes great responsibility!" Just my 2-cents on this topic.

I would respectfully disagree with THAT

Some of us high-handicappers will settle for 50-75% as our "sure thing." (and that might be the putter...)

This is not a lie.
I once hit a 400 yard drive.
It was downhill and downgrain on the Kaanapali course on Maui.

here's a question for you guys. let's say there's a golfer with a low handicap index of 2 or 3. now, this guy really does hit 300 yards drives, straight.

At 250, he's 40 yards past most of his partners anyway and has wedges and short irons to the greens all day. So he'd still be off 2 or 3.

I I firmly believe that many people who claim to hit it 300 have no idea what a drive of that length actuall looks like. I'm not talking about 200 in the air and 100 run. I mean one that rolls 20 yards at the most.

Not gonna lie, I can get it 300 yards somewhat often, but it's usually just before, like 290. I'll hit a 300-yarder once or twice a round, though, but still manage to shoot what I do now.

What's your clubhead speed? I'm just curious, because IIRC you are 15 or 16 and that means you can really crank the ball, and have a really high clubhead speed.

After reading the beer thread, I wondered what correlation there was between drinking, distance and score.

People drink at the course, shoot 70's and 80's and average 290 on the driver. Seems true to me.

i have actually hit the 1st green at my club, 305 yard par 4 and on a separate day, hit 310 on the second, 500 yard par 5 but i do not do this consistently. both were downwind and i tried to hit them as hard as i could (probably about 110mph clubhead speed) but very rarely do i get close to this distance. i average about 230 yards

I do hit it 300 yards quiet regularly, just not often on the fairway, pro driving stats are only for those that find the fairway

..and I believe the pro 'average driving distance' stats are taken from a few specific holes per tournament...not every drive they hit.
