Putting - upside down grip yields better results for me??

A few weeks ago I putted with my left hand below my right, which is upside down from my normal right-handed grip. So, instead of my right hand being closest to the ground, my left hand... my leading hand was closest to the ground.

However, my putts have NEVER been better. I'm on line. I feel like I'm keeping my shoulders square. I have a better "feel" with my stroke, and I can judge how hard / soft I'm hitting the ball.

Is this just plain wrong? Will I get laughed at like a "newbie" for putting with an upside down grip? Am I the only one who's doing this?

I think Fred Couples in particular putted "left-hand low" for a while a few years back. I've seen q uite a few other tour players doing it from time to time, but he's the one who stands out in my mind. I tried it but I couldn't get used to it and went back to conventional.

Putting is the most individual aspect of the game. As long as you can find something that is comfortable, and you are confident with it, stick to it. Just remember that it does treat you well, and don't give up on it if it does go bad for a bit. good putting is more about confidence than physical ability.

Funny, I saw Freddie do this(probably 12+ years ago, you must be old like me, hehehe) and gave it a try. I have been putting left hand low since, it really helped me keep my shorter putts on line, for me it helped take the wrists out of the putt. I had trouble with the longer putts(30+ feet) at first, but now it feels natural and has improved my putting considerably. And I echo what Ben said, if it feels good, stick with it.

Tried it before. Made a lot more putts but just didn't feel good. Went back to choking it down real far.

If crosshanded putting works for you, go with it. I experimented with it and it doesnt work for me, but whatever works for you is fine.

Yeah, I was going to say Padraig Harrington uses a left-hand low grip, and Jim Furyk has used it I believe, and he isn't too bad either

Well, I don't feel like such a tool, anymore. I'm sticking with it.

Crosshand.
Left-hand-low.

Sounds good. Better than "upside down" grip, huh? Thanks. It works, so I'll keep using it.

    • As Vishal said, i’m happy to give you a tour or look at anything specific at first but then I will narrow the focus to the few bits of info that you’ll want to see. Since you’re here for two days we will probably just do your seven iron the first day and I will add markers to your driver for the second day. they can “cure” overnight. Obviously a camera is not as good as GEARS, but at least you will know what to focus on and what the change should look like.
    • Congrats. If you are going to work with @iacas (I think you are..), then don't worry about it too much. He will take you through the process and help filter it to your priority/priorities. If you are curious or know something upfront then prepare a list of questions you can ask. Have fun.

    • I’m heading up in a few weeks to go through gears and very excited, been waiting all winter to make the drive up. After several years of watching amg videos and seeing other gears stuff  it’s going to be cool to see my own swing in 3d, better or worse! With numbers on everything. I like tech and information but how do you not get bogged down with a full mri? Did you just go in with a couple things you’d like to know or work on? Do most just use 7 iron and driver?  After going through gears and the limits of 2d video, do you feel like you have better awareness when you do film your own swing?    cheers!
