What a great nickname! I wouldn't want it to be my nickname, but a good one nonetheless.

I watched more than one interview with Mickelson this week during Doral. He was always gracious and humble while displaying a good sense of humor. He praised other golfers and the PGA for their efforts. Then went to sign autographs.

The general consensus among those who don't like Phil is that this is just his phony side. The truest haters will never be convinced that this is really part of his nature, but that this is an act put on by a phony person.

Phony or not, he still signs. That's more than a lot of guys do. I would rather get an autograph from a phony star than no star at all. :)

I'm not a Phil fan, but he is a nice guy. It was pretty cool to see him give $200 or so to the fan he hit. Well, he hit the watch, but you get the point.

I just really started to follow professional golf faithfully last year. So I was wondering has Phil always played only a few tourneys here and there?
Seems to me that as of his perfomences lately that maybe he should play more because he does not seem to be good enough (as of late anyway) to play only a little bit....
That was an interesting article...I had no idea that his peers think he is an ass

I will admit I am no fan of Phil's although I really don't have a reason why. I did watch the interviews he gave last week and to be honest he just seems insincere. I spent too much time working with jerks that could always say exactly what people wanted to hear but you could always tell that they were full or crap and slimey on the inside, and that is just how Phil comes off to me. I just can't bring myself to trust that guy, he reminds me too much of people I can't stand.

But as much as I don't like him I can still admit that I really don't have a solid foundation for my dislike and distrust. Hopefully I will one day be proved wrong (or right). Until then he is shady and full of shit :)

I agree 110%, he didnt have to give that guy a dime but he still gave 200.00.

Any other professional would have done the same. Phil is sponsored by Rolex, he should've hooked the guy up.

I disagree. I think most would have given a signed glove or ball or something. I don't know about you, but $200 is a decent chunk of money as far as I'm concerned. It may not be to Phil, but I would take $200 over a glove or ball.

And for all we know, he could have gotten the guy a Rolex. I doubt it, but it's possible. By the way, I wish I could struggle on the job and still earn a million or so in the first two months.

Agreed.

I agree with Jeff: he had to do it. Can you imagine the roar people would have if he gave the guy a ball? Even if it was a $50 watch, the guy would have to sell the signed ball on eBay and still wouldn't be able to afford a new watch. So yeah, Phil "had" to give him two hundred bucks if he didn't want to come out of the situation smelling like a fart. $200 is nothing to Phil. He makes $10/minute just in official earnings (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). He can afford 20 minutes of his time, especially if it takes him 20 minutes to take a dump.

Also, my wife IS a math teacher - and so is my mom. Both have said Phil's organization is more for show than anything and that it hasn't done much at all.

...Tiger has his first club or whatever foundation to have inner city kids play golf...

You really need to be a little better informed as to the purpose and scope of the Tiger Woods Learning Centers. The focus there is NOT on teaching inner city kids to play golf.

No offense, but how do they know this about the foundation? Are they involved in the foundation or a competing organization (such as a teacher's union)? Do they or live and work in the same town where the foundation operates, maybe?

I've known some teachers who have some very harsh and negative opinions about things like "Hooked on Phonics" or Sylvan Learning Centers that do very productive and beneficial work.

Are you a teacher by chance? Do you have personal experiences working with his foundation? I personally like Phil but as a teacher myself I've never even heard of it, and I live in the same region. Oh yeah, and one more thing Sylvan Learning centers are the biggest ripoff artists in the entire private education system.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
