Ha, I made some last-minute changes to my team to try to maximize the fact that this contest is once again being contested over three different courses (do any Texas, Midwestern, or east-coast tournaments do this???).

Here's my sheet:

[pre] Out
KJ Choi SP 14.4
Clarke, D PH 14.7
Lehman PH 10.7

Possibility 1
Price PB 9.2
Mickelson SP 16.0
Palmer PH 8.7
LoveIII PH 15.1

Possibility 2
Love III PH 15.1
CHIII PB 13.5
Mickelson SP 16.0
Oberhol PH 5.0[/pre]

Obviously I went with 2. I'll take the stronger players on different courses and an underrated guy playing with one of 'em over some so-sos playing on one course.

Entries are locked, boys, it's time to tee off!

Despite DLIII not having starting yet, it doens't look good so far with Phil 4 under after 5. And guess who has Phil... ME! Dude is on fire right now! Dunno what's up with Vijay lately though...

As you can see on ESPN I have Vijay, Phil, Oberholser and Furyk. I was strongly considering Riley, Purdy, Choi or big boy Gutschewski from the Nationwide Tour. Easy to say after they have teed off, but those would have been some stelar picks, so far. I am happy with my team the way it is though. Go team Winner!

Heh, -6 through 8 and CHIII is -3 through 9. I shied away from Vijay - his decline starts now, I figure. I'm at -7 or so, and I think this was another week where it's a good idea to space your players out among the three courses, so I have Love III, CHIII, Mickelson III, and Oberholser III.

Oops, DLIII just started (off of 10 at Poppy Hills) and birdied, so now I'm -8. With 8 holes completely unplayed. You may need -18 to be in the 90th percentile in this tournament!

I wouldn't worry too much about Vijay, he'll drop a 65 at least before this tournament is through, just make sure you've got guys who will carry you until then.

David Duval, aka Sir Shanks-alot seems to have affected his playing partner Fred Couples who's on my team.

Yeah Love III so far is carrying my team. Also my sleeper, Sheehan, has dropped me some birdies.

Charles Howell in P2. I saw earlier that quite a few teams in our league have him.

We were beat by Rafi, at -19. WTF? Mickelson is on a tear, man, setting or tying two course records within a week! This one by two strokes (not counting lift, clean, and place rounds). YOW!

I only wish my guys could have spread out the birdies a little more, and filled in the two 0s I had. One eagle, 15 birdies, and two pars. If you look at the raw scores for my team, they were 25 under par in the first round. And that's with Oberholser only managing a 71.

These guys are good.

I just realized as I write the round 1 summary that three members of my team are in places 1, T2, T2. And Raf still beat me!

It shows you why it's important to read Golf Digest

I read an article about Hunter Mahan and was impressed with this guy. Figured he's a good "cheap" pickup... and lookie, lookie... tied for 2nd with -7 ! Hope he'll keep the good play, I need to make up some ground to the leaders

My goodness these guys are going low. I'm at -10 already and Phil still has an entire 9 holes left to play. I'll probably be down one golfer for the weekend, though, and that sucks.

Raf... dude, you are the man.

Looks like I'm going to have two miss the cut, Singh and Parnevik. I'm only at -6 under so this tourney was pretty much gone before the get go.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
