Yesterday I was standing on the tee of the 18th (par 5, 474 yd, straight away, water down the entire left side) of my new favorite course when a squad of FA-18's came roaring overhead (the course is on a now decommissioned AFB but still houses the Air National Guard). The 18s were flying at 500 - 1000 ft up and flying in formation (nose off right wing of lead plane) as they flew overhead they started 30* banks and broke formation by pealing out of the formation one-by-one and passed right over the fairway ...

The power of the engines rattled my ball right off the tee it was sitting on ... it was just really cool ...

That would have been cool; where I work the planes fly right over our building when they are practicing when the air show is in town. Great experience for you.

I used to work right inline with one of the runways at the Wright Pat Air Force Base in Dayton close to the museum. Not being a local I thought it was always cool to see all of the wide range of military aircraft flying overhead. The locals I worked with were bored and sometimes annoyed having all of their stuff rattle of their desk when something came over really low.

I play near a large base and there are always C5's flying really low. They are incredibly big and loud. I've also had the pleasure of watching all sorts of jets buzz around during air shows in the area while playing the same course.

Which course were you playing - near Pease AFB?

I'm guessing you play Landings at Rickenbacker? Never played there but I've heard it's nice.

That would be pretty cool to see those jets come in. As long as I wasn't in the middle of my swing. Do you get a free mulligan if you mess up?

Links at Groveport. We typically don't hit when the planes fly over; we all stop and watch.

That isn't the 18th at Groveport you described.

That hole is two doglegs, the second over a creek that's 50 yards wide and the hazard runs the length of the right side of the hole. In case you wondered, It's exactly ninety yards from bottom of the near side of the levee to the center of the green. I was only a member for 18 years so maybe my memory is foggy but I doubt it. We most often had flocks of UH-1s flying over causing my Vietnam veteran buddies more than a few panic attacks.

That is awesome.

If the pilots could have spoken to you it may have been something like: "Pardon our noise...it is the sound of FREEDOM".

By the way....that sounds like an interesting closing hole on your new favorite golf course. My new favorite course is on a local Army base...a 27 hole gem with super greens and lots of character.

I am retracting my post and accusing myself of mental deficiency.

I got the OP confused with rgoudy1975's answer. That probably is a sweet 474 yard par five.

The course where I used to be a member was right across the road from USAF Greenham Common. One of the largest USAF presences outside the US.

I joined the club a few years after the Americans left in the early 1990s but it would have been fun being a member when you had C5 after C5, after B-52, after B-52 leaving from there!

Attachment 1398 Where I live and play it isn't uncommon to see the whole gamut of U.S. aircraft. A few months ago the Thunderbirds were in town and I swear they were mapping yardages over the local muni as they were about 1000 feet off the deck and circling for about 8 holes. The coolest though is seeing Air Force 1 circling about once a month. The only thing I could do with out are the CH-53E's buzzing my house at midnight. Those things make a tornado in my yard.

We used to have helicopters, mostly Chinooks, fly low over the garden at my parents' house regularly at night, several times per week. My mother was a

very light sleeper and it really bothered her. My father went outside with one of those twenty million candlepower flashlights and shined it at the choppers as they passed over for several nights in a row. They didn't come back I later met some of the members of that very squadron during my time in the RAF at Uni and found out they wear NVGs during those exercises. Oops.

I don't know why Hueys overhead would cause a panic attack for anybody except the VC. The Huey gunships and OV-10 gunships were our best friends. Honest to truth. (Yes, I'm a Viet Nam vet - served 12 months in the River Patrol Force in the Delta.)

Likewise to beach_golfer it is not uncommon where I occasionally play to have F-22's coming in for a landing, the runway is about a half mile away. It's funny to look around at all the people plugging thier ears when one buzzs over. We used to see the F-15's and stealth fighters years ago. Just about every year we get the Thunderbirds as well as several different planes. This year I was on the course and had the following fly over during the round: F-18, F-22, C-17, the RAF Red Arrows, F-4, B-25, and several Biplanes during practice for an airshow. Luckily the course was pretty empty so we spent a lot of time staring at the sky.

Not near, it was the "Blue" course infact ... a family friend actually designed it and I just rediscovered it this year ... good stuff!

If the pilots could have spoken to you it may have been something like: "Pardon our noise...it is the sound of FREEDOM".

Amen my friend, AMEN!

What is it with bases and 27 holes ... this course has 27 as well ...

That probably is a sweet 474 yard par five.

It really is a great closing hole ... it's reachable in two, but you have to be accurate ... lay up short and you should have an easy birdie opp. Nice way to finish ...

We have a airfield where people fly retro style planes, and when we were playing, a plane the size of one of those "flying fortresses" came over, and it was amazing. There was no way I could describe how big the thing was.
