How far is your longest hit and under what circumstances/conditions?

For me, I've hit a 3-wood 285 off the tee a few times, usually 275 or so about once a round when I used to be able to hit it well. Now I suck at woods so I almost exclusively hit irons. I've hit a 3-iron 270 off the tee a couple times on the flat without much of a tailwind, but that's a rarity that hasn't happened for a few years. This summer I hit it a couple of times about 260 or so from a very elevated tee. As for the driver, I sucked when I used to actually hit with them so I don't know how far I can hit with that club.

The longest I've seen another person hit a driver is about 350. The guy regularly hit it about 325. That was by far the longest driver of the ball I have encountered in over a thousand rounds of golf with strangers. I very rarely encounter golfers who hit it 300 or more...

So, any good stories?

I once drove from Baltimore to Orlando, I guess thats about 1200 miles.

Took me about 16 hours, but I stopped a couple of times.

321 yards and carried a bunker that was 280 away in a 547 par 5. I ended uo with a birdie after a 4iron to about 15ft.

The longest drive I've ever had was when I drove to green on a Par 4 320 yard. I had some wind helping me though.

Yesterday, I hit one about 310. It was down hill, but I didn't get much of a roll/bounce.

Longest I can recall (have taken a 3yr break!) is from a couple of weeks ago. Drove off the back of the green of a 310yrd par 4. Straight hole, no wind, no cart path help. Not sure how I did it myself as I'm usually between 250-270yrds.

I hit the green in 1 twice out of my last 4 rounds on a 270-yard hole at the course I play most often.

At the range (assuming the sign identifying yardages is accurate), I've carried 280+ with a range ball many times.

If the rest of the game was proportionally as good as my distance off the tee, I'd be very very happy.

Drove past a green on a 340 yard hole from the very back of the tee area. Pretty straight downhill. Got some huge roll due to the lack of irrigation.

I think we should hear lots of long drives from Texas. During some times of the year, the fairways get so hard there it's almost like hitting onto cement. I've driven 320-340+, but don't really count it since it was 75-100 yards of roll....

Last week I knocked one 330 or so around a dogleg left, but the ball had what looked like a cart path mark on it. Can't really count that one either.

Is it normal to be able to hit your 6I as long as your driver???

I know it isn't but I can't seem to get any distance on my driver. I've only been playing seriously for a month.

I can drive about 150-175 with range balls, but can hit just as far with my three wood and 6I. I can also hit 100yards with my PW. Is this abnormal?

Actually it is fairly common to be able to hit certain clubs further than your driver as a begineer. I don't know exactly how to explain it but it happened to me and several of my buddies as they picked up the game. Don't worry in time as your swing improves you'll be cranking the "big dog".

To answer the OP's question, I have no idea and don't really care as long as it finds the fairway

Thanks man, I did wonder if this was the case. I don't wanna just end up using my 3 wood all the time, but I guess it is more forgiving so i'll probably use it for now and keep practising with the 'big dog' at the range.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
