Trial Balloon on Posts per Page

As a trial, I've changed the posts per page (of a thread) to 18. It was 9, now it's 18, and it's probably 50/50 at best that it will stay at 18. There's no chance of it going any higher at this time. As I've said before, we have our reasons: page load time among them, MySQL optimization another.

We also had a small glitch with the database today. I was performing some maintenance, the site was under heavy use, and MySQL pegged. I don't know if some records were lost - everything seems okay - but please alert me if you notice anything goofy. Posts all seem to be here, and user accounts, etc. The DB optimizes fine, so it appears to be in okay health right now.

Haven't heard anything from anyone on this, which doesn't bode well for keeping it at 18. Was it really that much of a concern if nobody's going to bother commenting on it?

Also, new today, I've removed the reputation display from everyone's posts. Your reputation total is still available to you in your user control panel. People were way, way too worried about whether they had 27 or 29 points when anything over 4 is all you need to get the full functionality of the site (and you start with 10). So, here's to hoping that helps curtail worrying about reputation.
