I need help in selecting a new driver. One that fits my swing style.

I know that is probabally hard to give advice via the internet, but I gotta do something. I am struggling with a bad slice. It is causing me to loose distance. It is also costing me strokes during my rounds. I really want to find a driver that I can hit straighter. And fits my swing speed.

I am left handed. I have a really fast swing speed. I measured it at the golf store, and the device at the tee read 126. I can work to slow this, if I have to.
I have been using off brands since I started playing. I want to step up to Cobra or Taylor Made or some brand that is proven. Also, what type shaft should I be using?
So, any suggestions on a driver know for great distance, and can accomidate fast swing speed would be great.
Thanks for the help.

Cole

The best thing to do is fix your swing so you arent slicing... but... there are a couple things you can do to reduce the amount of slice.

Go with a low spin driver and a low spin ball.

13 Wedges
1 Putter

You should call around to some of the local ranges to find out if they have any demo drivers, or if they can put ghost tape on the driver so you can hit 5-10 balls with some different heads/shafts.

Some ones to look at:

Ping G5
Cleveland HiBore XLS / XLS Draw
Taylor Made Burner

Low torque shaft with high kickpoint would be good.

Make sure you get a quality grip too

Also hit some drives with your right foot back a little and strengthen your grip

i suggest a taylor made. i had a slice problem and i picked up the burner draw and i hit it really well, and straight. my swing speed is about 115 and i hit the stiff shaft. for 128 i would definitely look into a driver with an extra stiff shafta and a high kick point. i demoed the callaway hyper x, cleveland hibore, and the taylormade and i thought the feel to it was a bit better.

I tried a bunch of different drivers to fix my slice, driver didn't make any difference. I tried adjusting my grip next, no more slice.

Fix your slice by adjusting your swing/grip first and then start looking for new drivers. If you start looking for drivers to fix a slice, then I guarantee you will be disappointed. Some drivers may help with a slice, but no driver will cure it.

I was the slice "King". I bought the Taylor Made "Draw" driver and it helped a lot. However...I was still slicing. A driver can only correct so much! I started evaluating my grip and noticed that I was on the weak side so I strenghtened my grip where I could see two-three knuckles with the "V" formed by my thumb and forefinger pointed to my right shoulder. Slice gone!! I then changed my grips to a mid-sized for my fingers were pushing into the thumb pad on my hand. This normally would assist in slicing a ball...but it did not. Re-evaluate your grip while holding the club. I can assure you that this move helps 90% of slicers. Another thing to look at is the swing path of the driver. You should take a more sweeping motion versus a upright path. This will help cure a slice. One other thing...the ball position. If the ball is too far back in your stance...then the club will be open at impact. Place the ball just inside your left instep. Let her rip and get back with us. My Son is a leftie with a bad slice and with the tips I'm giving you//his slice is virtually gone. It DOES work!

Tools of my game:
Burner 09' Driver 10.5 Reg flex
5-pw G10's/ plus Taylormade R7 4 iron
Burner 08' 4 Hybrid
A70S 3 Hybrid Burner 09' 3 wood "Zing" SW 56 degree Fastback Laser range finder / plus Skycaddie SG5...also a great ball retriever!!

Thanks for the ideas / help.

I will put focus on my grip today. Try to get my hands into the correct position.
If this doesnt work, then I will try to make time for a pro to take a look at my grip.

I also want to find one of the clubs that has been suggested.
Like I said, I am using an "off brand" driver, and I want to use something that people are saying is a good club. Heck, maybe the club I am using now, doesnt even fit my swing style. I dont know.

    • He’s got to be the best player that’s never won a PGA-tournament these days.
    • Day 3 (August 13).  4' putting drill;  this is a modified version of the drill from LSW for short putting.   For context, in 2025, my strokes lost putting is more than 2 per round compared to the 15 handicap baseline, just on putts under 10'.  So that's a glaring weakness I think.  Anyway, so I set up 12 markers around a hole like a clockface, all coins, all face up.  I putt from each in turn, if I make it, I flip a heads over (or pick up if it's tails).  This means I have to make 24 putts eventually, ideally quickly.  It took me 38 attempts to do this, although 9 of the 12 coins were picked up either in the first or second go around.   Anyway, the baseline for a "90-golfer" (per Broadie description) is 37 attempts, so that's pretty good, but I'll keep trying to improve.  For anyone thinking about this, the number would be 30 for an average scratch player.   This was done on a real green at a nearby course's practice area.

    • That's not the right way to look at it, because you're not going to have a rating of 55 or something for even a 6500-yard par 72. There's a minimum rating (depending on the length), and then +s and -s to that. If a course has a bunch of +s and -s that even out, that doesn't mean the course rating is 100% the length. And what kind of math would it be if the course rating was lower than the formula: 103% length? 🙂
