I disagree with that. In fact, I could probably argue the opposite more easily: most cavity-back clubs have thicker soles that are better at getting out of the ground than the narrow soles found on most musclebacks.

This is what I found myself doing... When I started playing blades my swing got slightly steeper... and I found myself trapping the ball to the turf... more than my cavity backs(which have a much wider sole). Maybe it's just me. I actually lost a little distance, as I'm hitting the blades a little higher, and of course, with more backspin. Again, could be just me.

as an update, I "accidentally" won a set of MP-33's on ebay, 4-PW, for $120 shipped. Hopefully these can be the next step for me. Thanks for all the input and recommendations.

Good deal on the mp33's bro, you should like them. Old wilson blades are good too. Wilson staff fluid feel.

I've been using the A30S irons/hybrids for about a year now and have seen marked improvement in my swing and performance. After all of the recent threads on blades, etc. I'm thinking of moving away from such a "game improvement" club but would like to stay in the $150-$250 used club range, preferably an older Titleist model, or an abbreviated set of MP-32's (5-PW). My goal in this is to work on my game from a more traditional club instead of relying on the club correcting any deficiencies. Most of what I'm finding in that $ range are the 962/990DCI, 735.CM, and 755's, or MP-32's. Would any of these be better suited than another?

Another way to go about it is go and find an old 2i and practice at the range with it. It will drive you crazy at first b/c you will be trying to hit the ball too hard. What it will teach you, which is the same thing any long iron will teach you is, you gotta focus and be smoooooth with a FULL swing. If you can hit a 2i you will be able to hit any club in your present bag.

I will take my 1i, 2i, 8i and pw to the range and thats pretty much my range practice. I've got the 1i down pretty good and that practice has really helped my swing and has increased my distances. The 1i is from a set of old Wilson Staff tour blades that I've reshafted with DG 300 R soft stepped x1 and I do take that set out and play em. Troubled person that I am, I think its great fun.

Just re read my post and noticed a misprint. Should be hard stepped the DG 300 R's x1, sorry.

Just a follow-up...got the MP-33's today and headed straight to the "indoor" range/simulator. Awesome. Apparently all of my work with the A30S set in straightening out my swing has had some effect and these irons (at least the 5 and 7) are amazing. That "click" that I've read so much about is like a drug. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Don't forget Hogan. The Apex irons are so classic. I had a set of BH Apex Grinds (early 90's) that were really sweet to play.

    • I was on Golf Digest's Golf IQ podcast with Sam Weinman talking about being a "golf dad." https://www.golfdigest.com/story/5-golf-dads-advice I followed: Ian Poulter Mike Thomas Johnson Wagner Kevin Van Valkenburg Apparently the series was only five parts long, as they wrote up a summary article on it.   Golf Dad Part 5: Erik Barzeski on how to switch between father and instructor Podcast Episode · Golf IQ · March 2 · 35m Golf Dad Part 5: Erik Barzeski on how to switch between father and instructor — Golf IQ Erik Barzeski, Director of Instruction at Golf Evolution, is the father of a golf pro and an author, but also has the perspective of someone who works with juniors. • They sure do. 158 with an 8 iron is on the high end for me
    • Went back to controlling my knees. That part was getting a bit sloppy when I worked on my backswing. Right hip didn't slide or gain internal rotation. I would just rotate back and around and the left knee would be in a bad spot. Really focusing now on keeping my left knee very stable and straighter in the backswing. I can't go back to the old pattern of overturning the hips. I was returning to my old pattern to time my downswing. Turn forever.  Left knee controls both knees and hips, acting as an anchor. Feel like it straightens a bit.   Hinge sooner and faster. Not in a way that sends the hands out and flips the club over. I still noticed when the hands get to A2.5, the hands would want to flip over and flatten the club out a ton.  Still trying to figure out how to roll the forearms a bit open and not just roll the club inside a ton.  Figure out the timing to get the hands down. Still getting a bit of right elbow collapsing in the downswing because the arms are too high when I turn. Everything is happening sooner now. If the hips are controlled, the backswing is shortened. Because it is shortened I don't know when to get the hands down and I just turn because the downswing is a go.  Very slow (50%) swings are decent.
    • Distances look fine, no?
    • Day 207-12 Wider backswing and arm reconnecting in downswing. Did a much better job with proper wrist movements through downswing today.
