Man, I can't remember the last round I had without a 3-putt. I know this sounds sad, but, I avg. "3 to 4" 3 putts a round...it's all mental I know, anyone have suggestions? I can go a round all in regulation and fall apart on the greens, I think I need a shrink

Could it be my putter, I always liked the feel of my 8802, but some tell me its the wrong putter for a pendalum like putter swing...

I'm going through it right now. When I first replaced my putter, I could do no wrong. Now, I can do no right. I was getting down around 31-32 putts per round and my last round I racked up 41 of them. Frustrating.

At what distance to the 3-putt greens happen? Also, what length putts are you missing that causes the 3-putt?

If you figure out those two issues, then you can put together a practice regimine to increase your efficiency at those two ranges and reduce the number of 3-putt greens.

When you get old like me, adding distance to the driver and irons isn't going to happen so reducing scores has to come from somewhere else. I woodshedded with the SW and putter late last year and early this year. Look at the hdcp in my sig ... I average about 32 putts a round. It's the far out game that kills me!

I've only shot over 36 putts twice.

What you have to do is think "I'd rather leave a putt short for a gimme, than a long one and a comeback put from about 12 feet".

First, check the size of the grip on your putter. I can't tell you how often I see people with really really small grips on their putter - regardless of whether the grips are the right size on their other clubs. I had my putter re-gripped back in July to a larger grip, and it helped immensely. My hands just feel more comfortable, and I'm more able to hold the club with my fingers.

Now, where is your second putt coming from?

When I have a putt, I read the green as if expecting it to die in the hole, due to my own tendency to leave it short more often than long. Once I line it up and set the ball accordingly, I take my practice strokes thinking only about the speed . Then I step up to the ball and hit it, again, worrying only about the speed (and using the line on the ball to make sure I'm hitting in the right direction).

Also, putting practice - how do you practice your putting? I work on 5' putts primarily. It's long enough that your stroke matters, but short enough that you can make them time and again. How many in a row can you make?

Combine being able to make five footer routinely with getting the speed pretty close to right on the first putt and your 3-putts will be reduced over time. Ever since taking up this practice routine, I've had more rounds with 0 or 1 3-putt than rounds with more than 1 by a nice margin.

For Instance, I played tour 18 the other day and shot an 86 from the tips. I three putted twice from 6 ft in..a total of 4 three puts in the round lol

I find it a tad annoying that you feel the need to put a different post for every line you write.

As someone said earlier though, its all mental, think you'd rather leave short by a foot then long by 12. Aim for a dustbin lid around the hole rather than the hole... bigger target

Hi John! Regarding putters if your preferred swing is a pendulum swing (straight back and straight through) than look into a face balanced putter. If your swing is an arc swing find one that's toe heavy. You can tell the difference by balancing the putter on your finger. If the face remains horizontal to the ground it's face balanced and more likely to work better for a pendulum stroke. If the toe drops 45 degrees it's better for an arc.

Like anything in golf practice makes less imperfect. Gotta make time for putting too. Get the confidence in the 3 and 6 footers while practicing and it will translate to the course.

Does anyone know if the 'Super Stroke' putter grip actually does what it claims in regards to a putting motion? and does it fit over the factory fitted grip?

It just seems like it's a big grip, right? I suppose, if that's what you like and are comfortable using. My old putter has an oversized grip, not as big as these but bigger than normal. I am going to re-grip the one I use now with an oversized over the winter. (Probably a Golf Pride Jumbo Crown or similar).

I think it promotes a looser grip with the hands, and it seems to when I use the old one. My fingertips don't touch the pad of my thumb when I use the oversize grip. I try to hold my current putter the same way, and while I putt OK with it, my hands just don't feel quite right on the smaller grip.

it apparently helps to stop the wrists rolling resulting it a better putting motion. But i dunno if its just marketing jargen
