I'm a grad student with a 2-year-old child. Couldn't afford it before, can't afford it now, and I still play, so I guess I haven't been affected. :)

I chuckled a little...

I pray it worked out

IT DID WORK OUT! On Tuesday of this week, October 14th, I played a HUGE MATCH against a very good player. We were not able to tee off until 4:30 PM and it gets dark here in Upstate New York by 6:15, so we could play only 9 holes. On the first hole, I played the hole well (a par 5), but "short sided" my third shot as it got hung up in the high grass next to the green, had trouble with the tricky downhill chip shot and made double bogey, but he made par with a nice up and in from the front fringe. After that, I won 5 of the remaining 8 holes, and made BIG MONEY!! Unfortunately, I spent IT ALL at the 19th hole, as we talked to the Manager for a while (her Dad owns the golf course---a nice, scenic public course that is very popular with average golfers). IMAGINE THAT----------make some money and use it up for beer!!

It is TRUE---when the economy is in recession and the stock market is in THE TANK, people drink more to forget their troubles!!

Well, I'm truly glad it did and you are right. That's why they say in a down market, junk food, smoking, drinking and porn actually do very well. A lot of people are turning to something that will take them away from the reality for a little bit.

That was hilarious.

Economy no. Snow, yes

I have heard this before and just played with two really nice Korean guys and they confirmed that in Korea, they are so hard core on golf that they play in the snow with colored balls. Putting is almost like hockey, but YES, they do play golf in the snow. I guess same thing in Iceland or Greenland where you can play 72 holes in one day since it doesn't get dark.

I have a new job and I relocated to a new city. That is what has affected my game lately. just not enough time right now. I used to work at a course and play like 5 rounds a week. Now I really don't have time to practice. My swing is fading fast. SAD

I upgraded to a more expensive club - you have never really golfed until you didnt have to deal with the general public anymore.

its reduced my willingness to shell out 45 bucks for prov1s and ive stopped picking up some small, relatively useless accessories like fancy repair tools when all you need is something simple but im terms of rounds, hell no

Let's see I just bought a new set of irons, and I am still hitting balls or playing everyday so I would have to say NO. One thing has changed, I am digging around in the used ball barrel out back in the cart barn at the course where I work looking for decent balls to use in casual rounds. I can't get myself to use a new ball except for tournaments or bigger money games.

I've noticed that folk at my CC are spending their quarterly minimums and foregoing the club for dinners - the bar 37th Hole is a little light in the afternoons. The half-way house has seen a down-turn in business. One positive note... after 4PM on either course you won't see too many people. Our fitness center is down about 30%. Now, it is the end of the year for most golfers; however, between politics and the economy, people are nervous.

I guess when you stop finding them completely instead find 3 people in the undergrowth its officially a depression .

ever since I start to track expenditures on paper, I have a hard time justifying my occaisional round (especially since it usually entailed a trip to the range the day before to get my swing "right").

Despite that aweful shot I just hit, I'm really quite bad at this.

I'm definitely golfing on a budget. That means I'm playing at local munis rather that the more expensive semi-private clubs. I also walk to keep my out of pocket expenses down. I keep my eyes open on the course and routinely snoop around in the brush for lost balls.

    • Interesting changes. The idea of relegation and promotion have always been there in a different form (getting and losing your card etc and qualifying for bigger events) but it looks like they want to define it better for top tier events. The Tour has always had A and B level events (and even lower). It will be interesting what they choose as the Challenger Series events and whether some tournaments go to the Challenger Series that used to be prestigious. Not sure how the networks will take to this knowing they have “Challenger” Series events defined that way now. Also, I’m not happy that John Henry and Theo Epstein are involved. Look what Henry has done to the Red Sox.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
