Well since celebrities and people that are said to be smarter than me are endorsing Obama, I am going to as well!!!!!

I knew it would only be a matter of time before I lose my self confidence and judgment and begin to listen to what actors say. Go Leo Dicaprio!!!

Most of the people in here aren't actors (...actually, are any of them?) I took the thread to just be a comment on how many famous, symbolic, talking-head, lifelong Republicans are changing their positions in this election.

A cup of tea with Norm Coleman, anyone?

This thread isn't about 'celebrities' endorsing Obama, but rather famous and noteworthy conservatives. Did you read it through? So far, only Dennis Hopper is a 'celebrity'.

Erik chose the name for the merged thread, not me. EDIT: he changed it... thanks, Erik!

Note my words, they will all be sorry. A conservative voting for Obama should have their head examined. I just keep telling people to be very careful what you wish for you just might get it. The whole friggin place is going to come down around us. Anyone out there remember Jimmy Carter? Hopefully the republicans will have another Reagan to right the ship in four years.

Nice way to to encourage a civil exchange, Smallville. Again, most of the "dribble" I've linked to here, is from decidedly conservative folk.

This is from a website that leans towards the right:

Any form of taxation is really 'income redistribution' what I think bothers most conservatives is the prioritization of that redistribution. Only hardcore libertarians think we shouldn't contribute to our 'general welfare'.

I've never understood why many wealthy conservatives don't see the benefit in helping to insure that vast majority of people who are the biggest market for consumer goods overall don't sink into economic despair like they are beginning to now. Past is prologue, and the last time we were in this situation was in 1929 when similar economic behaviors to what we've seen over the majority of the last 12 years led us to the brink. And what pulled us out of it and into prosperity? Roosevelt's New Deal which started in 1933. Was that Socialism? Non in any pure sense. Wealthy people still accumulated wealth, as they always have. Numbers tell the story without resorting to demeaning labels: Seriously, the data is out there. Go look at over all economic performance, job growth and general prosperity of the nation over the past 50 years and you'll see that Democratic admin's fare better in almost ever category from growth to spending to managing the deficit. You could start with the Economic Report of the President .

Yes I do. Fondly as a matter of fact. He was a good man and a decent president. Far better than the right-wing has tried paint him. He had only one term, following 8 years of Nixon/Ford. Events put in play before his administration led to an extreme energy crisis which contributed greatly to the inflation seen during his term. Unemployment was overall lower than in the 2 years of the Ford administration that went before him. He also, somewhat to his discredit I think -- given the longterm implications we are seeing now, began the deregulation that led to economic prosperity in the Reagan years. He started by deregulating the Airlines and moved on to trucking, oil, communications, etc... Why don't I ever hear conservatives give him credit for that, considering their fondness for degregulation and 'free' markets? Anyway, a picture is worth a 1000 words. We've already addressed the inflation, but pay attention to the spending, unemployment, and deficit in both the red and blue rows...

People that say using his middle name is racist is simply hiding behind the truth.

I went to see Obama in his rally in Toledo yesterday. I must say, seeing and hearing in person was certainly an eye opener. I must have missed the line where they were handing out the free Kool-Aid. The phrase that irks me the most is when Obama talks about "growing the middle class". None of the programs, ideas, etc that he has brought forward have anything to do with growing the middle class by lifting up the lower class. they all have to do with bringing down the upper class. Does this honestly make sense to anyone? Would golf be as addicting to anyone here (and we are all addicted) if there were no hope of getting better, and we only focused on making the good players worse? Come on!!!!

Ya I heard they give out free "purple drink" at the Obama rallys. (people that watched Dave Chappelle will get that).

I am still undecided. Personally, I have a hard time voting for either. Not a strong election.

I just don't get the idea's of Obama I mean look at government housing for one example who in their right mind would want that for health care. Really. Also if you take the people who are on the verge of hitting that 250 thousand dollar limit like the man that I work for and give him no incentive to go beyond that so he cuts my hours and I am getting hosed but I am also NOT recieving a tax break just not new taxes. While I still am paying for this bail-out *&(^. Sorry just my rant. Also at least we caught a few tax breaks with W.

The tide keeps turning, as Colin Powell endorses Obama today

From CNN.com:
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said today he will vote for Sen. Barack Obama, calling the Democrat "a transformational figure." Powell said he was concerned about what he characterized as a negative turn of Republican Sen. John McCain's campaign and his choice of a running mate.

Watched him on Meet the Press this morning laying out his reasons why and was very impressed. I'm still on the fence but I greatly admire Colin Powell and he made a pretty compelling case that appealed to me.

This whole race is a joke, the Dems and the NAACP are just gonna take buses to churches in the south, and rack up a ton of unlikely voters. And guess who they will be voting for? I'm not racist, but I am very very conservative and I think Obamas views are complete bs. Just like someone said. If i took 5 handicap strokes from someone and gave them to a 36 handicap, that still puts them as a "high" handicapper, and the "low" handicapper is still "low." It's socialism in motion.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
