My group always defines the rules of play prior to the round. Typically require everyone to pick up at his esc max score.

PAR+3strokes. So on a par 3 I pick it up after 6 strokes, etc ...
I don't see the point in continuing. If you hit more than that, on a REGULAR basis, you don't belong on the course and should go practise on the range a little more. No offense, just my honest opinion

Personally, I pick up when I've holed out.

I do like the idea for beginners to stick to a double-par maximum. Helps with pace of play if anything.

I generally won't pick up. The exception is if it's a twilight round, as happened to me last week. I know I'm going to be playing fast to beat the sun and I'm going to have to miss a few holes anyway, so if I blow up quickly on a hole I'll pick up and move to the next one. So, no sense trying to save a 12 with 4 consecutive attempts to get out of the sand, save a few minutes and see if that translates into an extra hole before dusk.

Double par and not on the green for me. Thankfully I haven't had to pick up for that reason in quite some time.
But sometimes if I'm so pissed with the way I'm playing the hole, I'll just pick up and use the walk to the next tee to compose myself. I would do this between shots, but if I'm that pissed with the way I'm hitting it, I'm probably not walking too far between shots, if you know what I mean...

ESC is 7 for me, so generally my 5th shot I try to get aggressive and set up a putt for 6, or my 6th shot I'm always going to try to hole it. If I miss, pick up, you're always going to speed up play.

Sorry, but what is "ESC?" i'm a nood to the game.

Equitable stroke control -- the maximum score you count toward a handicap on a single hole. See section 4-3

here . Basically, it's a limit on how badly one hole can affect your handicap.

  • 3 weeks later...
a friend of mine and myself were playing one day.......just he and i...good good friends

i was about 18 inches from the hole....picked it up....he looked at me and said

NOT PLAYING THE WHOLE COURSE TODAY????....have not picked up since

The casual league I played in this summer set the cap at 8, which if a par 3 goes wrong can add up, but it kept play moving.

I think this type of play really slows the whole game for everyone and is why people rant over long rounds at public courses. The proper thing to do is follow the folks who pick up when they are delaying play in their group or the groups behind. In my view, no should have the right to hole out repeatedly for 10s, 12s, and higher while holding everyone else up.

^^ I totally agree. Always keep pace with the group in front of you!

I would say this is only an issue if you are new to the game.I didn't entertain going to a course until I had about 4-5 months practice.

I hit 110 last week worse round for about 4 months,my playing partner hit 80 and we were done in 3 1/2 hrs.We have ready golf nailed and know each others games,so we keep a good pace,I even hit an 8 and a 9 in that round.

For a higher handicap,if you are struggling with rounds of 110 to 120 on bad days you are going to possibly shoot 12's and 13's and will probably hold up the course.

It's a bit of common sense really,i've had to pick up now and then because it just gets embarrassing when it all goes wrong sometimes.

    • A few months back I purchased the following swing aid on Amazon ($130). It is solidly made of steel and heavy and stable in use. I use it both at the range and at home. Swing Plate Dual PRO by Jamie Brittain - Swing Analyzer Aid - Fits Standard 8mm Alignment Rod Sticks - Teaching Swing Plane Perfector - Indoor/Outdoor Golfing Practice. This winter I set a goal for myself to improve my backswing/downswing to be more consistent and on plane. I had a two way miss with my approach shots this past golf season. I have a hitting set-up in my garage, but I needed something to provide feedback while swinging the club. I came across the Swing Plate while browsing YouTube.   I set it up with the correct angles for my 8 iron. I started out with just the back rod in place, which prevents me from getting too far inside on the backswing. Started out slow and as I got comfortable increased my swing speed. Now I also came across a YouTube video on building a better backswing and getting more width in the backswing and added that to my practice. That video is here:    This video is a bit wordy since you are basically a fly on the wall as Ian gets a lesson. It took a few replays to be able to get the substance of the instruction. It was well worth the effort. Over the last two weeks I have been able to get out on the course and gauge how successful my practice has been. Overall, my consistency with approach shots has improved greatly. Incorporating the added width in my swing has also added a few yards to all my clubs.  What has your off-season training been like?
