Can a divot be too big?

Yes. If it looks like you begun to dig for sewer pipe installation, it is too big.

Great visual. I leave some serious trenches at times. I don't worry if my shot shape is good. I try to replace it or sand it and roll on to the next shot.

How far do you hit a 7 iron? I see some huge divots being taken out on the tour. Depends on the fairways. I would say your playing partners just aren't used to playing with someone who strikes the ball as well as you apparently do. Keep digging.

i would like to take divots but i cant. im quite a big hitter with a nice high ball flight. most of the time i hit the ball off the fairway so cleanly you cant even tell where the ball was sitting on the grass lol incl short irons.

My 7i is like 150-155 ish ... I don't think I am a really big hitter, I think I am just an average type guy ...

Just flicked to the page in Tiger's book that I remembered had something about divots. According to Mr Woods, taking too big of a divot means you can't control the ball's "spin, trajectory or distance worth a darn". Though apparently it's more to do with the depth of the divot than the size, so maybe you should look at that? I'm not much of a divot taker myself so can't really say much but just thought I'd share that little bit of info that I remembered reading.

I was going through that problem just a few weeks ago and it was drivin me nuts and makin my wrists and lower back feel to good either! I was hittin the ball ever so slightly fat (bout and inch behind the ball) and that definately isn't what you want. I haven't seen you swing but you seem to know what you are doing but your ball flight is probably being influenced by the clubface being held a fraction open so the ball will fade. I would say to go to the range or the course and put a ball down and tee right next to it. When you hit the ball your divot should start at or most preferrably in front of the tee. If it is behind the tee your clubs are either too long, you have dipped in one way or another which changed the lowpoint of your swing, or you are hangin back and not transferring your weight to your front foot which will shift the lowpoint of your swing in front of the ball where it should be with an iron. One of the these is likely to be the culprit because you said that your divots are deep. I would then start to choke down on the club about a half inch and keep everthing else the same and you should find a point where your divot aren't so deep. If your divots are starting in front of the tee and your ball position is pretty normal there is now way your divots will be deep unless you have extremely flexible wrists and can deloft the club for a long time after impact. That would hopefully solve the depth problem. I wouldn't be to concerned with the length of the divot if it is the width of the clubhead across the entire divot. If it isn't then your clubs might be too flat or upright in your lie angle. Also you could try getting in a fairway bunker ( DON'T DIG YOUR FEET IN OR YOU ARE CREATING THE SAME PROBLEM YOU ARE TRYIN TO SOLVE!!!) and try to hit the ball cleanly as you would from the fairway. If the ball comes out like a bunker shot (you shouldn't feel any resistance from the sand at impact and you should feel the ball strike the clubface) try choking down on the club til the ball comes out clean. Hopes this helps.

Well, isn't 4-6" x 1.5" basically a dollar bill? Doesn't sound too big to me. . . . I guess if you're 2-3" deep as well that might be a bit much. As long as your ball goes where it's supposed to and you don't start flinching when you swing because you're afraid of impact, go be a digger.

Have you always hit these size divots since you had these irons? It may be as simple as they are a tad too long. Have them checked...
