par is 72, i was hitting from the white tees, which makes the course just shy of 6100 yards long. it was about 45 degrees and wind was steady around 10 mph out of the south.

so i didn't start out too well - bogey, double bogey, bogey, but then i suddenly turned it around and did something i'd never done before: birdie, birdie (chip-in from off the green), birdie. i'd had two occasions before where i had back to back birdies, but never three in a row. followed the three birdies up with four pars in a row. had a couple more bogeys and one more birdie on 17 to finish out at three over par, 75. my previous best had been five over par.

yeah, i'm really working on lowering my handicap - i've had four really good rounds the past week or so. i recently purchased the scorecard software advertised at the top of this forum, and it's a pretty cool little program. once i get ten rounds or so logged into it, i'll revise my handicap on here. i feel like i'm starting all over with my handicap because i discovered a very serious flaw in my setup just last week, and once i made the corrections and got used to the new feel, i suddenly was hitting a lot straighter and with a little more power, too. so i'm letting the scorecard software serve as a kind of handicap-reset for me. :)

in a nutshell, my hips were opening up to the target as i was setting up to the ball. instead of just leaning straight forward from the hips, i was doing this kind of reaching/slightly turning motion with my right side, which consequently completely opened up everything on my left side. i've been playing golf for approximately five years as of this coming spring, and i've been to two different pros in the past two years, and just somehow never noticed that i completely open up to the target when i'm setting up. they both told me that i had a good, solid swing and great tempo and was balanced throughout the swing, but that my hips were just way too active. turns out they were looking at a reaction from the problem and not the problem itself. setting up with my left side wide open like that was causing me to wrongly position the ball, which more often than not resulted in a push fade or a duck hook.

so that was the flaw, and the cure was, obviously, to lean straight forward from the hips at setup and not let them open up. lo and behold... fired a 75. for the first time in my life, i'm setting up with the ball where it's supposed to be in my stance and making swings that feel precision and natural.
