I would check to see if the lofts are the same. Your old iron lofts may be stronger/lower than the new irons.

That's what I would suggest.

Thanks for the replies. And I am thinking of having the lofts strengthened to match my old irons which were yes the nickent 3dx. does anybody have any thoughts on this idea whether it would hurt the clubs or anything

Nope, that's the beauty of forged irons, they are pliable. However, because they have a tendency to bend, you should have the loft and lie checked around twice a year.

Strengthening the lofts will decrease the bounce, so the leading edge will tend to dig more (I think).

Also true, but, bending one to one and a half degrees won't make terribly too much difference.

I know I had to do a little strengthening between the last couple sets I had. My Mizunos were stronger than my Hogan blades. And my Hogan blades were just slightly different than my X-Forged on only a few of the clubs. (Oddly enough Hogans are made by Callaway...)

Hi There,

I think I might have your answer. I originally went with the Cally's as my first choice and lost a full club distance. This was due to overly stiff heavy shafts. I think the ones I was using were around 120grams, I now use the r7 with the 90 gram shaft and picked back up a full club. if you like the heads try a lighter steel shaft. good luck and hope it helped

Hi There,

According to ironfinder.com the R7s are about 2 deg stronger than the X forged, so it may not have just been the shaft.

2 times a year? Geez, I was gonna get the x forged, but your post makes me not so sure about them. I don't want to have to check the loft and lie every 6 months, as that would probably be expensive.

It's the same with any forged iron. However, my playing and someone else's playing circumstances may be a little different. I have my clubs in use practically every day of the year, and I play tournaments where I need to know I can trust that my clubs are tuned correctly. Maybe not so important to the average player? I flip my guy $20 every time I need this check done. So not terribly expensive...

Alright doesn't sound too crazy, I will playing daily also, possibly a couple rounds a day. So it seems like a necessity.

i dont mean to offend you at all but my with a 13 handicap you will be better off using cavitybacks as you probably dont hit the sweetspot on the x forged all the time and they have way less forgivness the the nickents so my it is just ball striking i am sorry if i offended you

Okay I have played these last three days in a row pulling at least one extra club. My scores were not that great before because I wasn't really getting on in 2 hardly any birdies. Well these last few days I shot 76, 78, 76. Way better than my 13 handicap which is actually a 12.3(i checked today haha) without those three scores. I guess I'll just have to hit more club, but with those scores i'm not complaining. Inside I have known since my first round I needed to take extra, but I'm just so used to my old iron distances....all in time i guess.

Thanks

So can we assume that you aren't going to mess with the lofts? Heck, to get that kind of an improvement I would be willing to take two clubs more!

Congrats on the low scores. BTW.

Why thank you sir haha. I was really suprised adding up my scores and all three days i recounted and recounted i couldn't believe it. I played yesterday and shot 77. All these scores at different courses and i'm gonnna play my other favorite course today. Hopefully I can break 75 even though it's the toughest course here.

Congratulations on the lows. I was looking around at the lofts of the Nickent 4DX irons(your previous irons?) and the X-forged. The Nickents are all stronger by 1-4 degrees on lofts(Nickent PW 46*/ X-forged 47* to Nickent 4i 20*/ X-forged 24*). That means about one club difference for all of them. It is a great marketing tool for manufacturers to say their clubs hit longer. Yet the loft of their 3 iron is another's 2 iron. Lofts have progressively gotten stronger over the years. I can remember when Nickent's 3 iron loft was considered a 1 iron.
