I think what you're missing is that if a stock goes up 10%, you make just as much money if you have 5 shares at $100 or 100 shares at $5.

Yeah, got that part figured out too. Like mentioned, I have a limited starting point. I want to spread out what I've got. "They" say "diversify", right?

Anyone know where to find this list? Still too lazy to look for myself. Thanks.

I said "inexpensive" not "cheap." And no, I don't think $5 is cheaper than $10, its just that I have a limited amount of funds, and want to make the most of what I have.

If you put it in a Roth IRA you can transfer your money between stock/bonds/and cash without paying a fee as much as you want. The area right now to be in is bonds though according to my business teacher who controls over 2 Million of his clients money. Once the average starts to go up and crosses over the line, you will want to move it to stocks though.

If you've only got limited funds (limited being a relative term) then you could be killing yourself in commissions, wiping out any gains you may have. I still think you're confused about the market in general. The aim isn't to have the most number of shares, I'd rather have 1 share of BRK.A than 10,000 of Citigroup!

There is no point in buying a stock purely based on the price as it appears you are doing. Look at low load mutual funds and ETFs where your money gets spread around a bit more.

The commision fees are a bit of a pain. But, after my first week I'm up 5% and that's with the fees adjusted in. I think that's pretty good for an amatuer.

FWIW, the market (as measured by the S&P500; or Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund VTSMX) are up around 5% (both available at annual fees of around 0.2%/year) over this time period. You've matched the market which, quite honestly, is far better than most amateur investors.

+9.55% after week 2.

Picked up a few more good looking companies this week. I'm nearing my buy cap though. Sooner or later I'm gonna have to start selling to buy more. Don't know how this will work, but I'll cross that road when I get there I suppose.

+9.55% after week 2.

Well, its been just over a year since opening my sharebuilder account. Put a little bit of money in to get my feet wet with the stock market. I got in at the bottom of the bottom and found some real deals a year ago. I haven't bought a stock for a while, but have watched what I have go up and up. As of today I'm up 193.18%! Go me!

Not bad. So what did you end up buying in the end? Did you recycle the profits out of one and into another or run side by side efforts? Interesting to see how our comments from a year and 18 months ago have panned out.

My portfolio is certainly a lot healthier than it was the last time I commented here! My investment strategy has changed quite a bit since then though...2009 was where the easy money was to be had.

Here's what I've got.

100 Shares ATSG Bought at $.72/Now $5.40
15 BAC $11.94/$14.98
100 BZ $.58/$7.32
100 EMKR $.83/$1.61
50 F $2.66/$13.76
100 GMET $.61/$1.26
150 GSAT $.46/$1.40
10 ING $8.70/$10.60
300 MESA $.12/$.10
100 RAD $.44/$1.38

I'm a pure novice at this. Bought everything when I opened the account and haven't touched it since. BZ and F are my top performers, I was thinking of selling out some and using the profit to buy something else. But I got in so low to begin with, I just don't know where I can find bargains like I got to begin with. So I'm just letting them grow. I'm content at that.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
