I haven't played in a few years and I'm trying to work on my distance off the tee. I'm hitting on avg 230 ish. I'm 27 years old 5'11'' and 200 lbs. I used to hit the ball further years ago. What excercises or tech. can I use to get my clubhead speed faster? Thanks!

the biggest thing for me to keep and maintain my club head speed(average 120), is to do core workouts. when i go into the gym i'll do my usual bench or squats or whatever i do that day, but i also do 100-125 situps. about half of those i come to the top and twist, working the obliques. i also think working on your chest and arms helps too, i do alot of bench and bicep curls as well as tricep pulldowns.

I’ve taken a drill from my years as a baseball player which helped to increase my bat-head speed. Swing a club while you are immersed in water. You will of course want to use a crap club for this as the shaft will most likely fill with water and ultimately become useless (I use a 50 cent driver that I got at Good Will).Get into a pool so that the water is chest high - first work on your toe-up and toe-left mechanics. Keep going deeper into the pool so that you are able to work on your full swing. Now, you can either hold your breath or get accoutered like Jacques Cousteau with a snorkel and hookah-line to remain submerged and get the full effect. This may sound stupid, and even look more ridiculous, but when you are able to hit a 5 iron 225 yards it really doesn’t matter.

Strength helps with posture, balance and endurance, but clubhead speed is determined by mechanics and properly controled grip pressure.

The more you reduce tension in your hands, arms and upper body the faster the club travels.

If you're looking for pure clubhead speed work on core strength, lower body strength, and explosive power, like plyometrics and isometrics. Also work on golf specific muscles by swinging a weighted club. Make sure to swing a light club like a swing fan or shaft without a head too.

I'd also strongly suggest working on your swing fundamentals in general. I guarentee that many of the people on this forum claiming to swing in the 110s and 120s can reach those speeds but can hardly hit the ball swinging that hard.

i would worry more about fundementals than stregnth. i was watching the gc junior drive chip and putt and some kids were hitting drives about 260yds or better and that kid couldnt have weighed more 140lbs soaking wet. i am 6`1" and weigh around 210lbs and could never swing fast maybe around a 100 or so now i have been working on my swing and am around 115 feeling like i am swinging easier. swinging correctly is way more important than being strong atleast if you want to shoot low scores that is

this is what I learned by studying golf swing and try it myself. These increase my club head speed.

If you see those baseball players throw a ball, you will see that they lift their front legs (the weight now tranfer to the back foot), then put back down as they start throwing (weight transfer from back foot to front foot). Football players do the same thing, transfer the weight. This increase their ball speed.

The best thing is to try yourself. Try throwing a tennis ball with you weight either on you front foot or back foot the whole time and see how far the ball will go.

Now, try throwing a tennis ball again. This time transfer you weight from your back foot to your front foot when you throw. The ball should go further this time.

Same thing happen to the golf swing. You should feel you weight transer to you back foot during backswing. Then to your front foot in down swing. BUT REMEMBER, TRANSFERING YOUR WEIGHT IN GOLF SWING DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO SWAY YOU BODY. So, at this point, golf fundamental is needed.

In golf swing, there's really an energy store in your body. For me, my energy store in my right hamgstring (I feel tension everytime in my right hamstring). Now it depends on you if you can transfer that eneregy effecitently from your body to the club head.

Energy transfer order (for me)
right hamtring --> hip --> core --> shoulder --> arms --> hand -->club head.

YOU CAN TRY IMAGINE YOUR ENERY TRANSER IN THIS ORDER. THIS WILL HELP YOU SWING DOWN TO THE BALL IN THE RIGHT ORDERS.

If you have watch SPORT SCIENCE on Discovery channel. There' a part that show how energy transfer from the body to the club head of that golfer(don't remember the name)

Power also comes from your hip. The faster you turn you hip in the downswing, the greater club head speed. You should start downswing with your hip while all your muscles are relaxed. But this move is nothing if you don't know how to transfer the energy to the club head properly. Again golf fundametal is needed here.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
