Well, just got back, a day early unfortunately, from a trip to play The Nevada Open which was held in Mesquite.

The first day was held at The Palms GC. Not so great. Well, I shouldn't say that really. Just had the feeling of a plain 'ol public course. Really nothing eye-catching nor memorable about the course. I Suppose it didn't help that it was no more than 55 degrees, with a monster wind all day except for about 4 holes. My whole group hit 3 wood to 210 and 201 yard par 3s... It was severe. But yeah, for it to not be that fun a course on top of that, made for a hard day. I shot 4 over...

The second round was held at The Casablanca GC . Now that was an enjoyable round. The weather that day was gorgeous. This course was great. A nice look and feel, lush and green. A little bit of visual intimidation from the tees with desert not too far from the fairways. But the fairways are generous enough once you get the hang of hitting them. Greens were nice-ish. I've putted on better, but, I was making a ton of putts that day so I can't complain. There is a nice stretch of really hard holes right in the middle. Holes 7 through 11. The fairways seemed to narrow a bit, and, there is water in play down the right side of the entire hole on each hole. (This is where the course horse-shoes back around itself.) I would definitely play this course again. Shot a disappointing 1 over that day.

So 5 over total had me missing the cut by 3. But, having not played the courses prior, I suppose I can't be too hard on myself for not making it to the money.

Coincidentally enough, Gerry from Big Break Mesquite was in the group in front of me. I didn't interact with him at all Day 1, but on Day 2 we were hitting balls next to each other during warm up and we chatted a bit. Also caught up on our second rounds earlier today, as we were both getting ready to leave the hotel. Turns out he missed too... Bum deal for both of us. He also shot 4 over the first day, but got me by one, shooting even par Day 2.

Bummer on missing the cut, hope you got a chance to play Wolf Creek while you were there. Its like miniature golf for real golfers. Tee up and hit through the hole in the canyon wall

Ive played Falcon Ridge and Wolf Creek up there, WC is an experience every golfer should have. Gnarley course

I was thinking about playing there today since I missed the cut, but, decided not to. I'd imagine I'll get back to Mesquite for a chance to play it in the future. But I do know it is a must stop.

While I was driving through Vegas I was kicking myself again for not thinking of at least getting on Bears Best. I can get on there free because there and my course are owned by the same company.

If I made the cut, I still had all of Friday off. Plenty of time for a round and then the drive back to L.A. Way to think ahead on my part...

I live really close to bears best. I use their practice facility alot, one of the few all grass ranges out here. It is one of the few places I will praise out here. I play it alot during the summer, but not very much in season. While I'll shell out wads of cash to play courses when i travel I have a hard time swallowing $100 greens fees for my local courses.

I dont know how many of the courses in Vegas youve played, but I always reccomend the Paiute courses. Sun and Snow are both beautiful, and if you feel like banging your head against a post play Wolf.

Yeap, I got to play Paiute last year. I played Wolf and Sun. Its totally awesome out in that part of Vegas. I love the wide-open seclusion, even though you're still so close to civilization. Plus the unlimited water funds the Indians get is taken advantage of perfectly. Those courses are sweet.

Just got back from there and played:  Conestoga, Falcon Ridge, Oasis -Palmer, Wolf Creek and Coyote Springs.

The only course I would not play again is Falcon Ridge:  Lot of blind tee shots, making the group ahead of us super slow.  It just wasn't that much fun not knowing what you're hitting to and often the landing areas are sloped and you find yourself saying "if only I had know I would have done this instead...."

The other four were great with Wolf Creek and Coyote springs at the top.  Though the greens at Coyote Springs are very difficult and the pin positions were ridiculous (stuff like 3 paces on in areas where there is no way to get a ball close, or pins stuck on top of mounds that are like 12' diameter).

Played Wolf Creek for the 3rd time ... now that the coolness of the scenery & layout has kinda worn off, I've realized how difficult a course it is.   Elevation changes galore.     Aweome course nonetheless.   Agree with Falcon Ridge comment - nice course, but we hit it on an incredibly windy day & the blind tee shots were troublesome.

    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
