Call Ari at Scratch Golf if you want the ultimate forged wedge built to your exact specifications. I can't say for sure if the have the "largest grooves" but I can say, without a doubt, that you'll love em either way.

I don't think Mizunos are milled to max depth, and the cg14 and 12 I'm pretty sure are cast. Like TitleistMan said vokey's are cast. Not sure about the taylormades.

For something that LOOKS conforming to the casual observer, just go with a good groove sharpening tool. Use it with vigor and you'll be shredding covers in no time.

Just don't say who told you.

Scratch are supposedy good wedges, but be prepared to give your 1st born to purchase them. I've found in my quest for wedges that one that spins like no other are the ADAMS Puglielli and they can be had at reasonable prices from ebay.

another vote for the Callys with MD grooves. also the Sonartec T46 wedges spin really good too (milled face & yo-yo grooves) and they can be had for a song on ebay thru proshopewarehouse right now (i think they only have 56º wedges left)

There are deals to be had on the Scratch wedges if you keep your eyes open. I got over $200 off my custom trio when I bought them in November. If you stick w/the JLM series (which still offer quite a few options and can be custom bent on request) you can get these from Scratch directly for as low as $150.

I'd have to give a vote for the Callaway X-Forged. They really do bite and have a forged feel I suppose. I'd say they bite almost as much as the Vokey SMs and feel a touch softer. I added a 64* in this club and I like it, but I don't think it has quite the feedback on chips as a Vokey. But it's kinda funny to me, one man's crisp is another man's harsh. And what some people call "soft" others call "mushy". The X-Forged seems like a good compromise. And they do bite when new, although I'm not sure how long that will last.

A piece. That's not an "as low as" price. I'm not denying their performance or quality, all I'm saying is it's not justified by BETTER PERFORMANCE or QUALITY compared to what's on the market for a more reasonable cost.

Whats wrong with your mizzys?

Scratch is the way to go really, my golfsmith had two "used" JLM series (forgot the grinds) and they were all of $140. they were in essence brand new.

THey can be had for just as cheap as any other wedge, but like anything, you gotta look for it.

Whats wrong with your mizzys?

Exactly. The new 1018 series is going to be priced at $150 directly from Scratch. That's only about $25-35 more than I see most cast wedges selling for at my local shop. Scratch is also coming out with a cast series that's going to be even cheaper. Sure you're not going to have all the options that you would in a Tour Department wedge (currently $299, possibly $349 soon) but you're still going to get a custom fit wedge and save quite a bit of coin in the process.

LBlack14, with the quality of today's clubs over all quality and performance becomes subjective at best. Personally I love the Scratch wedges and don't believe that the small additional cost offsets the quality/performance point at all. Especially when you factor in the customer service. My tour department wedges were built to my exact specifications after many lengthy emails and phone calls with Ari, the owner of Scratch Golf himself. We discussed my common tendencies, how I liked to play wedge shots, what shots I liked to play w/my current wedges, what shots I'd like to play but can't due to my current equipment, the feel that I like in my grips, how I like wedges to feel in my hands (swingweight), the type of feel that I'm looking for in my shafts, etc, etc, etc. I the end I knew that I was getting exactly what I wanted which is why I went with Scratch instead of the new Vokey's that I had planned on. Sure, the Vokey is a great wedge but I was really making compromises to make those wedges fit my game, just like I had with every other wedge purchase in the past. I didn't have to do that with the Scratch wedges. We talked about what I wanted out of a wedge (a lot, I like to have my cake and eat it too) and low and behold, that's what I ended up. There are enough options in the new 1018 series that you can get what you want/need w/out going with a TD wedge, more so than any other off the shelf wedge anyway.

I play the callaway Md wedges and they eat the covers off the ball. The spin rate is almost to much. When you are having to play a harder covered ball just to keep from having to shave the ball on the green before you putt you know the grooves are grabbing the ball.

Amen to that I spin the ball a lot more than all the guy's I play with and maybe they could use more groove volume but I almost hate to buy tour level balls because there not going to last more than one round if that,I could spin my 990's pretty good with v groove's now with new square groove irons and wedges I'm really putting zip on the ball.

My Mizuno wedges provide great spin on the ball. I practice chipping yesterday and notice how most of the balls checked up even with the mix match variety of balls I have in my shag bag.
