I got a lot of hate mail here for raving about my 64° a while back. But it is

I got one about one month after changing from right to left handed and it is a godsend club for me and I have worn it out in just 4 months and need another one. I got the Cally and it is straight money when the grooves are fresh (You know when you've worn the wedge out because the shots start to roll out). I was getting hop and stop action on greenside chips with range balls no joke! And most people don't realize that you can play it to different trajectories depending on how much you open or close the clubface just the same as with other wedges. I can open it up and hit it sky high or hood it slightly and hit it 100 yards comfortably (it's gonna spin back bout 20 feet though) I had heard all these stories about how they are a novelty club and I don't buy that because that club gets more work than any club in my bag except for puttter. It is a godsend from the bunkers to a tight pin and it is really good on those nasty severe downhill chips because they generate so much spin that it knocks a bunch of steam off the chip then it trickles down to the cup for tap in. I play in Kuwait on desert courses and it is great from hardpacked desert even with the 7 degrees of bounce it because of the spin it generats. I had zero problems with mine from day one and I was playin off a 36 handicap at the time. The club at address doesn't look much different from a 60 degree and you have no chace of hitting yourself in the face with it on a flop shot. People think that they are for flop shots but you have to be in a pretty extreme situation to need to hit a flop shot with it because a normal shot with it spins enough to stop quickly. My suggestions would be to get one and work with it and it will improve your ball striking because yes, you have to hit it pure but you have to hit a 56 degree pure to get the results you want. Also don't get chrome finish because even though the wedge will last longer it won't spin which is what you want from that kind of loft and replace it when you see it's performance decreasing and put it in th e practice bag. Get a vintage or raw clubhead for sure if you want the benefits that the club is meant for. If you practice your short game regularly and have a descent swing you can hit this club regardless of what anyone says. People thoght the 60 was crazy but know they are mainstream and no one bats an eye at one in someone's bag. Lofts much more extreme than 64 might start to become of a fad but 64 is legit and very playable.

I'm sorry I know this question wasn't directed at me but I'd like to field it if I may.

Dead on man if you are scared of the club it will own you but if you treat it like all other wedge shots it is a deadly club. One of the guys was also talking about the "whiff" shot and it does work especially when the ball sits on top of the rough. Oh and the only way you will swing right under the ball is from the rough if you don't choke down on the club to bring the clubhead up to the level of the ball but that is standard chipping knowledge. But that is good feedback because it makes you aware that you have to monitor the depth of the ball in the rough or pay the price.

While I completely dont agree with the sentiment some have expressed saying "Its simple enough to just open the face of a lower lofted wedge" I still say there just arent really any situations Ive run into where a 60* at standard address wont get the job done.

But saying that its "easy" to hit an open faced wedge flop shot is simply not true. If that were true people wouldnt be looking to higher lofted clubs to solve the problem. Dont get me wrong Im a total equipment *****. but I dont go around saying Im gonna buy a club to hit a shot that I hit easily with a flattened out sandwedge anyway.

I dissent on that one a little bit..

No one can just open up the face of a lob wedge. Its not easy, but tis not hard..But as with everything in golf, when you start to practice..these shots become easier. People think that open feced flops are hard shots because i gurantee hwen they first tryed one, they skulled it and made a big number. Guranteed! But the reality is that people are looking for easy ways to make the game easier on themselves. does phil carry a 64? Yea, hes also phil Mickleson.. If you ask me pelz is doing some dumb things to him butt thats a differente story.. Plus opening the face does not simply define a flop shot, my favortie shot around the green is a 60 layed about 1/2 open, and i kinda just hit under it, it goes how far i want it, its pretty easy to play, and it bounces once and stays there. There is no flop too it. But the point is, i practiced this shot a ton..

Sure of course, this game is all about repetition. I can open the face of my 60* now and hit it well. But I couldnt 6 months ago. And I never have to really. The only reason I ever practice that shot, is just because I think its fun to hit. Almost never do I need more loft than my 60* a standard address. And thats the point I was making is people ussually buy specialized equipment like a 64* wedge so they dont have to pull off a tweaked shot with another club. IMO you dont need the 64* for that, because a 60* does just fine

Indeed, people are just looking for an easy escape from shots they think are hard.

obviously you need to open the face for bunker shots, but beyond that, its 60 degrees of loft.. thats alot. itll get the job done just fine.

I will be carrying a 54* SW and 58* S/LW next year after Christmas. A 64* just seems like too much IMO. Everytime I look at it, I think the ball would hit me in the face. I have used a 56* for my whole golfing career (3 years) for almost all shots around the greens. I can flop it or do whatever with it. I don't think there's a need for a 64*.
I think Pelz is crazy for saying that we should carry all these crazy wedges. It just complicates things...especially for golfers who are not that good. Fewer choices=easier decisions.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
