I have 52*, 56*, and 60* Scratch wedges. I can do the same things greenside with the 56* and 60* for the most part... the main reason I support having them both is for the bounce variation and the distance in full shots.

Whatever fits your game is the best for your bag.

I think 52, 58 is a great idea and I might go in that direction for my next set of wedges.

I really liked this because i was stuck between this and what i got and 54, 60. I figured if i wanted a bit more loft id have the guys at my club bend em a degree. Personally I really like them. Cant wait to get them and the Project X shafts(im getting them on my irons in a month or two). Well thanks again for the help

54-60 is great. Good thing with a low bounce 54 is you can bend them to 56 like me and still have options or you can bend them the other way for a gap wedge too.

I LOVE 54* wedges. They are the best.

dude, ok ive played a 58* vokey out of the sand for like 3 years now. I wouldnt go with like a super low bounce, because that would make it pretty hard to hit from anywhere other than the sand. The new vokey spin milled are great! thats what i game. They spin like no other!!!! I hope that you enjoy your purchase when you finally get your hands on some. It took me like 3 moths or so to get mine after I ordered them.

I am having the same problem, with my wedge set up.
Option #1: 58* LW
53* SW(bent from 54*)
48* PW(bent from 47*)
4 iron in the bag

Option#2: 59* LW(bent from 58*)
54* SW
50* GW
46* PW(bent from 47*)
4 iron out of the bag

60* wedge is not a real option for me (never hit it well).

Ive been using a 54/8 and 58/8 on my vokeys for about a year now. I used 52/56 before. I find the 54/58 set up good for me because i use my 54 as basically a weak gap wedge and the 58 as simply a more lofted club, no more. I use the low bounce to keep the clubs as flexible as possible. I will decide on which one to use based on the trajectory on which i want the ball to fly.

Is there a huge difference between 59* and 60*? If you can't hit a 60*, what makes you think you could hit a 59*?

Probably just mental, I've bought 2 60* wedges thinking i could hit them(could not), both times I had to bend them to 58*. Sorry it doesn't make a lot a sense but 60* wedges just don't work for me.

52, 56, 60.

I use the 60/4 from firm bunker lies and when I'm short-sided, I also use it for all my pitching and some chipping. I use the 56/8 for all other bunker shots.

Used to play with 54 and 60 but found I hit a three quarter 52 better than a full 54 so it better fills the gap between SW and PW.

It meant I had to lose the 3 iron but I also found a smooth 75% hybrid is easier to hit than full 3 iron anyway.

It also comes down to the courses you play, I play two and on one of them it's very rare you need to hit a 3 iron, everything's shorter or much longer, so the 4 wedges give me more options. I think that's why they're referred to as the scoring clubs. Hit it close, knock it in.

If you get cleveland wedges with DSG you can use the 52 and open it as 54 and open a 58 so you can use it as a 60 (if that makes sence). Or if your going to stick with the vokeys get a 54 and a 60 so you can hit it up and sit straight away.

Well, I'm coming into this discussion late, but here's my take. I play 3 wedges besides my 47° PW. I played only 2 for a long time because I couldn't find a high wedge that I could play. Then last fall I had a chance to play free at a mountain course, and I knew that the fast greens would not like my wedge set at the time. I had some book money (tournament winnings) to spend in the pro shop, so I just played around with a couple of the wedges there a Vokey 60° and Callaway X Tour 58°. I didn't like the feel of the Vokey, but the Cally felt like it was part of me. I bought it on the spot and I've loved it ever since. I even backed it up with an X Tour 52° as well since adding the the 58 changed my gaps. The 52 has become my primary chipping club. So now I'm bagging:

AP2 PW 47° (more of a 10 iron)
X Tour 52° (11° bounce)
X Tour 58° (9° bounce)
Cleveland CG 11 SW 56° (14° bounce)

The CG11 is used solely for sand shots (can't live without that club), so my gaps are pretty even with the other 3 wedges.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

47° / 53° / 58° ----plus a dedicated sand iron

Four wedges in what I think of in my mind as just a two-wedge system.

47° was a nine iron for most of my linkster life. It'd different for younger players who grew up with modern strong-lofted irons.
With my matched irons, 5-PW is 4-9 to me. I played with the classic lofts for too long not to think in the older loft / number correlations.

The sand iron isn't really a part of the wedge loft progression; it's a shot-specific utility club.

So in my mind, it's a 53° pitch/chip wedge and a 58º pitch/lob wedge.

It sounds like you may want to also consider the Vokey TVD wedges. These come in a 54* and 58* and are spin milled. They have a similar grind to the Cleveland DSG. I own two of them and had them both bent 1* strong for distance purposes. In any case, they took a bit of getting used to, but I love them. Well worth the money, although they were pretty expensive seen as they only made 600 (not sure of total or each). Just my two cents.

    • By today’s standards that’s certainly true, but they weren’t having any trouble hitting golf balls in 2005 so I’ve equipped myself with what was among the very best equipment around that time for a very reasonable investment. If I get to the point where I feel like I’ve outgrown that stuff, I’ll reward myself with something more current. But for now I don’t need adjustable loft and lie and modern head shape, just a good quality, proven club with a clean club face. For now I’m going to concentrate on the basics. I know you can get more yardage with newer woods, but I don’t care about distance nearly as much as consistency, and you can’t buy that for any price.
