We seem to get the other side of this issue -- lots of money.

What if you were starting out and money is an issue. What would you buy? What would you include: clubs, bags, carts, shoes? What purchases might you defer to later? New or used? If used, include any additional costs like re-gripping. Keep it under $500. For the adventurous, make it lower still.

My original set was set of internet branded clubs: steel headed driver, 3W, 5W, cavity backed irons (3i-9i,PW,SW,LW), $30 putter (still my putter); bag; push cart; and shoes. Except for the shoes, no name brand items. It is rather sad that the bag, cart and shoes are a significant part of the purchase.

Good shoes are a necessary item IMO. On sale, you can get some nice shoes.

Going to Pinemeadow.com,
Several drivers: $100-120
Woods: $50
Excel Strong Irons: 3i-SW: $168.90
several putters: $10-40
Complete sets from $150-$420

Bag and cart (on sale) $39

I am definitely on the cheap side with my bag, but I really like it. I like to go used on the irons, new on the driver, build my own fws, and can go either way on the putter.

My current bag, including shipping: $50 for the Ayrtime driver (new), $60 for the Laser irons (Ebay), $4 for the lob wedge (thrift store), $20 for the putter (new), $30 for fw heads (Hireko and Golfworks) and $30 for shafts (pulls), $5 for bag (thrift store).

assuming that I am as good as I am now I'd get a set of players irons off of eBay. Also I'd get a 905r off of eBay. Probably go to a gold store and try some used putters and get one that I could afford and like. Get some used snake eyes or vokeys whichever would be cheeper. To top it off I'd get a discount bag and shoes along with some use nxts. This might go over 500 though.....

I'm on the cheaper side as well. I bought my texan classics complete set for $130. Driver, 3 and 5 fw, 4hybrid, 5-pw and putter. It's a decent set. There is one thing i don't understand, my 4hybrid and 5w is the exact same loft 21*.
This all got me started. I am currently in the market for new irons. I am getting shoes for christmas, also got a sw, gw and lw. All of this is for under $300.

If i could do it all over again, I would buy a used set of decent irons for roughly $250, go to the local play it again sports and get my driver 3 and 5 woods. And buy brand new shoes

I found all prices at either rockbottomgolf or globablgolf.
It was a lot tougher than I thought it would be, but I feel that this is a pretty good set. Irons than anyone can grow with, good wedges, solid wood and driver, and a light bag. I would have rather had a hybrid, but I figured I'd save money for a couple of rounds instead.

Hi,

whatever you are going to buy: Buy it now.

Prices for used equipment are VERY low at the moment. So it is a good time for gearing up.

I just recently bought a used Cally FT-i from the preowned site. . .it was a heck of a deal at $125. That was with a $100 off coupon. I also bought a set of used macgregor M455's (forged), for $209 at Golfsmith. That leaves nearly $200 for a putter, wedge or two, bag and supplies, which you can find great deals on as well.

Take a good hard look at Golfsmith's used irons. CALL THEM if you find something you like. I actually ordered my Macs online, then I noticed they had not shipped in about 3 or 4 days after I ordered them. They were out of stock when I ordered. . .the guy I spoke with actually found me a set in El Segundo, CA.

Go used before you just try and get off cheap. You may be surprised about what deals you can get. Go to some local pro shops and see if they're letting anything go for ultracheap. They have to clear space for the 09's they'll be getting.

So many new versions of almost the same thing are released so fast every year, you can really get quality equipment new and cheap these day. I mean like mentioned the nike Sasquatch drivers really havent changed much in the last few years. You can get the model from a couple of years ago new for like $100 bucks. Same with irons. Just look on TGW.com for a model on clearance that probbaly isnt all that different from this years model for under $300 most of the time.

Clubs I havent thrown in a lake yet

This sounds pretty good.

Used clubs are almost always significantly cheaper on ebay and you can get great deals on equipment. I rate the 905r and the 905t as well. A mate of mine owns a 905t with an NV shaft and that thing is really great. I reckon it is almost as good as my 909 d2.

if this for a set or a season?

Green fees, gloves, balls, tees

you could spend 500 in a week depending on where you play and how often.

Consumables and green fees will make your club investment seem small in a very short time frame if you do not consider per month / per week budgeting for these as well.

Owning a set means nothing, using them means everything

I'm the king of used clubs.

Driver: Taylor Made r5. Very cheap, guessing $75ish.
Fairway: Mizuno F-50. $60
Irons: Ping Eye 2. $120ish
Wedge: 2 Ping m/b's. $40 each
Putter: Ping craz-e. $75
Shoes: Footjoy. $40
Balls: Callaway HX Hot Bite $25

Total of $435. Then I'd get a shirt or two, a glove, and a round of golf, and call it quits.
