Finally Fixed my slice for good

It depends on how you swing. If you are getting your power from your hands/arms/upper body, then you have to consciously (make it happen) rotate your arms/hands. As mentioned above, this requires great timing. When you're on, you're on. When you're off, you will be way off. Requires a lot of practice to keep your timing down. It can be done, lot's of great hands players or upper body guys out there.

Thanks for this post. Through some mirror work, I've discovered the upper body flexibility is just not there, and when I try to force it, bad things happen. I can do a reasonable shoulder turn (left shoulder back past the ball) , but when my left arm is straight it doesn't get up high like you see in the pro photos. It's more horizontal. Since I rotate with the left shoulder/torso to draw the club back, I would then have to lift the club conscously to get that higher backswing.

I struggled mightily with an open club face. One of the biggest changes for me was strengthening my glove hand on my grip. I also had flying open hips left over from years of baseball. Sometimes with a weak grip it can be impossible to consistently rotate those wrists and close the face at impact like your talking about. I wonder if that played into it for you?

The quote "flying open hips" should be an advantage not a disadvantage -- you just need to harness that move within an acceptable golf swing. Sliding "flying open hips" are the bad ones. Home run hips are the good ones -- well, maybe line drive hitting hips are better. The modern swing has a lot in common with baseball swings. Several years ago during the slide and high reverse C finish was when the baseball hips got a bad rap... unjustifiably.

Good point. Sliding was definitely involved. I also really wanted, subconsciously, to be on the same plane as the baseball swing due to so much coaching and muscle memory. I used to take the club back flat, come up way too early and alter my spine angle on the way through the ball and pull the club across from the outside tremendously. In baseball as in golf in terms of arm extension. The extension just happens at different moments correct? I would tend to straighten out too early and allow my front arm to come way off of my chest and loose a ton of power and again, throw the club at the ball from an outside path...But absolutely, I have learned to harness the positives from baseball and apply them to golf.

No problem, I had, still do I guess, the exact same issue with the left arm at the top. Now, I don't force it back. I just turn back until I reach a point that I know I can control the down and through motion. It is a hard thing to do, so practice that with your mirror. I also advise you to study up on the grip. The grip is so damn important. I find when I get my grip the way I want it, none of this swing plane open face over the top crap happens. Just turn back, then turn through and ball looks like a Pro hit it. No thoughts of release or weight transfer or tension or anything. Just turn back and through. It is amazing. However, I find it to be a challenge to "find" that right grip from shot to shot. The more I do it, the quicker I can find it. If I skip a day of hitting pitch shots in the yard, it can take 30 swings to find it the next. Some days I never find it. Yesterday I found it on the range during warm up and was able to find it often and was a Tour Pro for a day. Today, back to searching for it every 3 or 4 shots.

I find that if I imagine I'm hitting the ball with the back of my left hand (Smack!) the clubface is square at impact and it's virtually impossible to slice the ball. And if I focus on throwing the ball to the target (i.e., using the club to throw the ball to the target) instead of just thinking of swinging the club to hit the ball, my entire swing aligns itself the way it's supposed to be. I can't think about the rotation, it just happens.

And if I focus on throwing the ball to the target (i.e., using the club to throw the ball to the target) instead of just thinking of swinging the club to hit the ball, my entire swing aligns itself the way it's supposed to be. I can't think about the rotation, it just happens.

That is good stuff.

So I'm guessing the timing of the wrists rolling over at impact must be precise enough so that the club head is just barely closed at impact which causes a draw. Sounds pretty tough to do at high swing speeds, everytime I've tried to hit a draw I get a bit carried away and I usually end up with a giant hook, or something worse

    • The best was Tommy Gainey in the prostitution sting a few years ago. Now that was funny.
    • Played Musgrove Mill GC today. 72.3/155. First round in 4 weeks and shot 44-39. 2 triple bogies on the front and horseshoed 4 putts today. Overall, 10 fairways, 8 GIR and 31 putts.  Set a goal today to par the 3 toughest holes (4, 18 and 9) and birdie 10 or 12 (which I have never birdied). Parred 4, 9 and birdied 10. Crushed my drive on 18 and had 139 left, but in casual water. Dropped back a little ways and took an extra club. Hit my 8-iron well but it came up short. Bunker shot from wet sand left me an 18’ for my goal. Read the break well but perhaps an inch too much break, and a touch heavy on the speed. Ball circled the hole 270* and tapped in for a bogey. Handicap dropped 0.1.
    • Day 143: 5/18/24 Practiced prior to round today. All aspects of the game.
    • I’m sad that no player got arrested this morning. It should be a feature now for every tournament.
