I have rebuilt every part of my game from green to Tee, all bar this short 30 yrd quick stopping shot. I invariable make 10 - 11 GIRs and can scramble pretty well with the ones I drop short and get up and down about half the time. It's this short over an obstacle shot I have no confidence in ( bump n run over a bunker is not reccomended lol )
Was 8 over at wknd and dropped 6 of these at two holes where I had to try and get over an obstacle from 30 yrds but messed up the shot going fat and thin both times. Any swing keys a guy should be working on for this type of shot?

LOL.......you mean other than not leaving yourself that type of shot in the first place?

Assuming a decent lie in the short grass and at least a little green to work with, I back it up in my stance, weight and hands forward of the ball. I use my 56* and really hit down on it a lot harder than the distance calls for. The ball flight is pretty low as a result of the forward press delofting the club. It's all about having the confidence to know that the spin will stop the ball. If it's not hit confidently, the spin will be insufficient and it's gone. Not really as hard as it looks once you get it...... Needless to say, a higher spin ball will help too. A great shot to have once you get it and it'll impress the heck out of the crowd too!

Read Stan Utley on the short game.

He sets up square to the target, ball slightly forward in stance and weight on the left. His pitch swing then aims to use the bounce of the wedge to brush under the ball by rolling the forearms through the swing... (heck his genius is certainy explaing this swing clearly.)

Basically his technique is meant to be natural and flow from the full swing. I've been working on both his pitch and chip shot swings and so far am pretty pleased with the results.

Read Stan Utley on the short game.

I'll agree on Stan Utley's book as great help for all thing short game related. I like his approach to most short game shots better than Pelz.

For the particular shot you mention, this is something I have worked on quite a bit over the last couple years. For these shots I usually just open up my 58* a little and swing about 50%, making sure to finish high with the swing. It takes a little practice. I wouldn't quite call it a 'flop' because I'm not opening the face much - just enough so that the 50% swing is not too much.

your set up for this shot under pressure is causing you to miss this shot.

1) feet close together
2) feet open
3) 60-70% of weight forward
4) rear knee towards the front knee
5) hands close to your body
6) make sure that when you take the club back that at half way your iron should be facing up in the air.

practice this shot and once you hit the ball solid everytime you can try this for a higher shot over obstacles, aim slight left and open the club face.

I open the face for this shot to use the bounce.

Ball slightly forward in stance, weight on left side , then you play it almost like the same feeling as a bunker shot. Since the face is open you can swing down aggressively and it wont dig as the bounce will keep it from doing that.

    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
