To keep me from swaying I have to keep my weight on the front leg. During the backswing the back leg straightens out which starts a chain reaction of bad events. Any suggestions?

got a vid of your swing? if youre placing all your weight on your front leg during the whole swing i dont see how you can get any power/distance... sounds like a recipe for a full arm swing... coil is where its at... and in order to coil properly you need to use your back foot first then your front foot thru the swing

There is always the ball tossing drill...

Don't throw out your arm, the idea is to learn how your lower body works, not to see how far you can throw. Here is what you do: Assume your golf stance with a ball in your right hand. Now make a 3/4 underhanded throw as if you were skipping a rock over water. When you do this, observe how your lower body works, how your right leg braces and stays flexed, how your lower body opens up ahead of your release, and how you wind up with your weight shifted to the left side.

You don't have to throw super hard to find out you coil your shoulders, keep the weight on the inside on the right flexed and braced leg and rotate open to fling the ball.

Maybe this will help you. Years ago I tossed lots of buckets of balls learning how to clear my left side properly. It changed me from a hip sliding, hands hitting swing with a reverce C high finish to a normal, ground up, body release, and also showed me how the arms and hands stay more in front of the chest. Your throwing motion looks silly if you don't use your body (and will feel ineffective as well.)

It is just a drill, not a perfect motion for the golf swing, but it has many aspects that might help you.

That's seems like it'll work good. I just did the motion here in the living room and seems pretty good. Do you use this for a swing thought?

I don't believe that a front foot loaded swing is going to limit the coil. By the right leg straightening and weight remaining forward, this will allow for increased hip rotation and in turn allow for a full pivot.

Its hard to provide a personal and unique diagnosis with seeing your golf swing, but we can always discuss why your are making the moves you are. I mean, there must be a reason why you are swaying (your original issue?)

You keep your weight on your front leg to avoid this but it sounds a bit extreme. What is swaying in your swing? your hips? if its the hips, then keep the hips centered - or closer to the target than you're used to - and don't allow them to move back over your right leg. I'm not advocating a front loaded swing, but I think that if you consciously transfer your weight to your back foot, you have moved too much and its there for too long. Swaying mainly occurs with moving your body's center of mass. This should be maintained through a proper pivot. So if my diagnosis is correct... and it may not be... perhaps the focus should be on your pivot. If you are visual, youtube is an excellent resource as long as you can appreciate different camera angles are giving you a different view and maybe a different perception.

In one of the 2008 Hawaiian events on the PGA tour, Weir and Ames were on the top of the leaderboard and Faldo did a side by side comparison of these two players. I remember the camera angle being dead face on for Weir and Ames' camera angle was from a slightly angled face on view (maybe at 4 o'clock instead of 3).

Faldo drew a line on the screen showing how much Weir kept his pivot forward (as he shreaded S&T) and Ames had the appearance of having a big upper body transfer over this trailing leg. "see how they are different?" he states. MW was focusing on his new S&T pivot but if you get a chance to watch SA, he has a beautifully centered pivot, very similar to MW's. Both their instructors have very similar philosophies so they look similar, but with a bad camera angle, mr. faldo was able to mislead us with misperception.

Rather than finding a drill to work on your move, change your idea and you will change your action. Golf is all about your internal representation of what you think is going on.

my younger brother does the same thing, he does not turn level his hips with the ground but at an angle back and up and causes his rear knee to straigthen up similar to yours.

try putting a club behind your back with your arms holding the club and practice make your backswing with your knees bend and you will begin to turn parallal with the ground rather than a back and up angle.

    • Day 33 (20 Feb 26) - played the Friday men’s group shootout.  Solid day of working from some tough shot results - made for a good number of up and downs for par (8 of the 9 pars were such). Cart mate and I discussed the visual aspect of the game - and how much it plays into the individual’s mindset during the round.  Love when the discussion is focused on learning and taking positives away and not just how bad the miss may be.  
    • Day 507 - 2026-02-20 Got some backswing work in on GEARS Hybrid.
    • Still kinda working on the backswing stuff. I can turn < 45°, but I tend to tilt toward the target a little. I can tilt away from the target, but I tend to turn a bit more. Case in point. I can do it, though: This I can do all day (it's more lateral than I want, but it's very linear): Here's what 38° of turn looks like. Almost freaking nothing.
    • Good progress. I am finally feeling like I am settling my weight into my right foot earlier in the backswing. Right hip sinks back, right leg feels staying flexed. Feeling very stable and firm in the right leg. I feel like I could do a good squat with that right leg. Very balanced. 
    • oops, forgot Pebble Beach and Spyglass.  And two more of the original Open rota, Prestwick and Musselburgh (with hickory shafted rentals).  And Muirfield.  And maybe a few more, I'll check my list when I get home.
