I have to stick up for Bubba here. When I was 18, I was hitting it 325-340 with a $40 Walmart driver. But I was a 30 or so handicap. Just because I hit it that far, doesn't mean I was hiting straight or scoring well. I've actually lost a lot of distance the past 8 years by swinging in control and having stiffer shafts (and getting fatter and out shape.). I hit my 8 iron from 150 now instead of a PW like I did then. Now my handicap has gone down, along with my distances.

I don't think that anyone said that distance equates with scoring. What we have said is that his equipment (shaft flex particularly) does not match his distances.

Bubba, you actually hit cross handed? I've never seen that before. I know Hank Aaron used to bad cross handed as a kid and he still hit it farther than anyone else. Just imagine the distance you'd get with a proper grip!

Furthermore, the tour average driving distance for 2008 was 287.1 yards, making your claims of regularly hitting it over 350 yards seem frankly absurd.

Not that I agree or disagree with this dude hitting 350...

But despite the average driving distance of 288 for 2008, if you take a look at the long drives of 2008 a 350 yard drive doesn't even really get you on that list. Seems to me that the middle is at about 395.... which just tells me that all tour pros can hit it further than the average, they just don't choose to.

there's a guy who plays around here who can drive just about any par 4, but he's also using a driver that's like 52 inches long or something ungodly like that. everyone's always astounded at how far he hits it, but i'm like... you notice how bloody long his driver is? you give me a day or two to get used to swinging a club that long and i bet i could hit it just about as far.

These are my carry distances:

Hey, I'm just wondering if you are using longer clubs than normal because you're tall. If so I'd like to know how much longer... and what impact if any it had on your distances?

With a full swing:

I believe that's exactly what you want. A consistent yardage in between clubs is definitely a good thing to have. I think you will find that a 10 yard gap between irons is very consistent with everyone else.

Your massive claims and poor grammar are doing you no favours in my book. Say what you will, but you have to accept that this is an internet forum and you have no way of proving your claims.

Can you explain to me how the tour average driving distance is any relevance to disagree on how far i hit it? Those guys on tour have "ALL" the game needed to be a pro and dont need to bang it out there 350+ bec ause the rest of their game is excellent...... I am not a pro, i just hit it a very long way and i play off about 8 so why the tour average off 288 means that my claims of hitting 350 seem absurd just is beyond me, are you going to say that the long drivers of the world who hit it 400+ are lying because the tour pros average out at only 288?????? the big hitters like myself dont have quite the rest of the game that the pros do so no need to compare my distances to the pros

Yes i do hit it cross handed, and to me its far longer than if i used the "common" grip, but how can you say that my equipent does not match my distances??? i use a regular shaft in my driver and i DO regularly hit 350. jb1982 is totally right when he said he used to hit 340 with a $40 walmart driver..... who is to say what equipent is right and what felxes are right... whatever equipent you feel comfortable with, why change it, i played silloth on solway golf course yesterday and shot 69 gross, used driver once because i was getting 280 out of my cobra m speed offset 3 wood straight down the middle, i was outhitting my playing partner who plays to 5 handicap and hits it well, he was hitting 3 woods and i was 15 yards past with 4 iron on most tee shots.. i dont think you guys will ever believe me but why would i waste my time BS'ing on here about how far i hit it, im not even debating on here anymore, dont have doubts because your just jealous, have doubts because its pretty damn impressive!

Who says what flexes are right? I'm pretty sure there's a formula for determining the right flex. It is based off physics, not what you or I

think . I dare you to try to argue with physics. I have no problem with you hitting 320. I'm not calling it BS. I just think that your equipment is not properly fit to your swing speed. A regular flex is not the best option for people who hit the ball over 300. That's a fact. It's based off physics. You would probably be more consistent with stiffer shafts that fit your swing speed. That's what they are designed for. Hey, and to say that anyone is jealous is absurd. No one mentioned being jealous. Distance does not equate with scoring. If there is anything to be jealous of, it would be scores that are posted, NOT driving distance. No pictures, just numbers.

Even if you only hit it 260 yards you can still go low. Just look at Zach Johnson.

Golf is 50% mental, 40% short game and 10% power game.

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.

They don't - The player tells the caddy, "7 iron" the caddy pulls a "6 iron" and tells the annoucer "8 iron" then they throw the towel over the bag so no one can tell what is really happening ...

This may not be how it works, but with my fragile golf ego this is what I BELIEVE happens. So please, no one, don't shatter my fragile golf ego.

I have friends who consistantly hit it past me though. I'm happy with how I hit it though. Just like Zach Johnson, hit it how you can and stick to your plan, and you'll get it done.

I don't think this is what happens. When I saw a tournament, I was always looking to see what they were hitting. Then, I checked the score card for some yardages and realized they hit the ball pretty damn far. I've caddied for guys who hit 8 irons 160. I would hope that pros can easily hit it farther than that considering they're the best on earth. One of my friends hit a 7 iron 185 and an 8 iron 170. He went after the shots but hit the green both times. Pros can easily hit it much farther than we think.

It would be pretty cool to hit the ball that far though.

    • Not to take away from the OP's question but the Snell 3.0 is about all you could ask for in a ball. I'm not a paid spokesman and my opinion does not reflect on the owner of the site. Lexi Thompson could beat most people with a Top Flite, or a Nitro. Ben Griffin? He doesn't offer a lot of street cred so I'll pass. Now if Fat Perez or Heavy Ballesteros start using it then?????? 😀
    • Just read that Peter Oosterhuis passed away. He was the one and only celebrity I have asked for an autograph! In September 2007, I was in the Charlotte Airport awaiting a flight reading my October 2007 Golf Magazine. It was during the FedEx playoffs and Tiger had just won the previous tournament with the Tour Championship the next event. I watched the event listening to the dulcet tones of Peter Oosterhuis, among others. I opened the magazine, and started reading an article about Oosterhuis and the opening picture had him posing as James Bond in a movie’s opening sequence. I looked up from the article and he was sitting directly across from me!    I approached and showed him the article and asked if he would sign the photo. Mr. Oosterhuis asked “Are you keen on golf?” When I responded positively, we spoke for about 10 minutes discussing the fact that both Phil and Tiger had won FedEx events prior to the Tour Championship. He was very gracious and a wonderful storyteller. I was saddened by his battles with dementia and missed him on CBS’s telecasts.
    • Day 50. Hand path follow through and face control technique work. 🤯 in a good way.
    • I have been playing the Tour X for several years and find it to be a great ball. I buy them at Golf Galaxy and they often run sales. Was able you buy a box of 48 for $90 after applying a coupon from Dick’s Sporting Goods. I am a big fan!
    • This keeps being a great reminder.
