I know a lot of people are ditching 3 irons for hybrids and even some of the pro do that. However, lately I have been trying to train myself to use my 3 iron in the range and it is not the most easy thing to hit i can tell you that.

However, after hitting 20-30 balls with 3 irons, when I switch to a 3 hybrid or even a 5 wood, it is such a ease and every hit seem to be solid hit.

I came to the conclusion that eventhough 3 irons are not easy to hit, they are really good training aid to train you to develop good swing.

I have decided that every round of range will include my 3 irons for training. Anyone else tried this and can share your view?

It does take a steady stance to pull 'em off. Seems like you could be onto a good pre-round warm up club. It takes discipline to pull off the shot. I'll add a couple of long irons into my next pre-round warm up next time I play.

Thanks. I've got tons of confidence with hitting 3irons off the tee box or even on approaches from good lies. The confidence shrinks to zero if I'm forced to carry the shot all the way home, though. Over water and I'll get tense. I guess I'll not bat an eye at a 5 iron forced carry off the deck.....but a 3 iron will make me hesitant. As you said, though, practice with this stick and shot is the key to being able to pull it off during the round.

As a training aid? I dunno. I think its probably easier to catch a mistake in your swing with a shorter club rather than a longer one. I dont think training with a long iron gives you an advantage in any way.

Since (with exception of driver) every swing you make is supposed to be the same regardless of the club in your hands, i would stick with the shorter ones. You will make the same mistake with a SW than you will with a 3i, anyway.

im a 21 handicap and my 3 iron and 61* lob wedge are my 2 favorite go to clubs.

i hit my 2 iron occassionally off an even lie with a light fluff of grass under the ball.. or off the tee on a tight fairway...

i can not hit a hybrid at all. i cant even get the ball up in the air with one. something about the way it looks at address completely throws my confidence down the drain...

I love swinging my long irons. I guess because they were all I had to play with when I was a kid. I still have the old Spalding 1-9, PW set I played with. If I had my prethers I would still be hitting 1 and 2 irons.

I agree with Ks8829 that a long iron helps you to focus more. Have you tried hitting a lot of shots with 3 irons and then switch to say a 7-iron? You will be surprise how well you hit the 7-iron after that.

You can also look at it the other way and develop your swing with your short irons to the point that it is fundamentally solid enough so that you can hit the three iron perfectly fine with the same swing.
