I like the top swing the best. The player in the second video lays the club off at the top [shaft points to the left of the target] -- a bad habit I get into occasionally myself. From that position, sooner or later I'm going to start hitting weak fades. And it can promote shanking the ball, too, if your release isn't good.

I would like to swing at one plane, but I've been coming over the top for so long, when changing my plane I went the other way getting the shaft parallell at the top.

Neither, I try to keep the same correct plane for every club. This way i get great consistency and i can be flatter or more upright for different clubs really easily.

I can't get into the 1-plane, 2-plane mindset of their being totally different. There is a constant gradation from highly vertical (2-plane) to mostly horizontal (1-plane). As clubs go from short to long, the best swing plane shifts from more vertical to more horizontal. It's a simple function of the length of the club and geometry. This can always be best seen from behind the player (or in a mirror).

Anyone who thinks they can hit a driver well with the same swing plane as a 9 iron is simply fooling himself. One will be good and the other bad. Or they are not really doing what they think they are doing.

Hi,

DTL for black shirt :

p.s. "Or they are not really doing what they think they are doing" this is so true

The easiest way to identify the one versus two plane swing is at the top in the DTL view. A one planer will have his left arm in line or on the same plane as his shoulders. His left arm will cover the top of his shoulders in a straight line with them at the top. The two plane swinger will lift his arms in a more vertical fashion and the left arm will be at a steeper angle and above the shoulder line at the top. A two planer will have to drop down more vertically to get back to the shoulder plane and the ball.

The two planer in the video only lifts slightly higher than the one planer. Not much difference really. Some two planers lift higher.

There are things I like about both of these swings.

Purple shirt guy has a great takeaway and top position, very much on plane, if not the slightest bit to the inside. Black shirt guy has an outside takeaway, but he gets his club in plane nicely on the downswing. Incredible drop of the hands. Black shirt guy also loads his hands more at the top of the swing.

The biggest difference is impact. Black shirt has more lag and a later, more powerful release. On the first video, the purple shirt guy (in white shirt) has a very handsy release, not quite a cast because he does hit down on the ball, but that's his biggest power leak.

So that said, I like Purple Guy's backswing and Black Shirt Guy's downswing. So hence, I like Black Shirt guy's swing more.

But to clarify to all, these are both two plane swings. Black Shirt Guy's downswing plane is clearly steeper than his initial plane.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
