hello World... I guess that doesn't quite have the same stigma as when Tiger Woods announced those same words in 1996 :)

I've been a golfer since my days as a junior, and recently got back into the game after a 6 year hiatus due to personal reasons. I thought my game would be much rustier, but other than my touch around the green, everything came back after a few rounds and a few trips to the practice range. I used to play to a handicap on the plus side of 0, but I no longer have the time for 250-300 rounds a year.

I'm a lover of all things golf, history, technology, and course design. I would describe myself as a feel player, although I love a good technical discussion. I am more of a traditionalist which seems to transcend most aspects of my game and love for the game, but like I said, I like technology as well. My clubs are old, but they still work.

My favourite golfers used to be Nick Faldo, and Davis Love III. I still like them, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for Tigers whole approach to the game, and being Canadian, I guess I should be rooting for Mike Weir.

Looking forward to hanging out here, you seem like a friendly bunch.

Cheers, Allan

  • 9 months later...
Welcome Iceman,

I joined the boards around 18 months ago looking for men's leagues in Vancouver, as I was moving here from Edmonton area. Lived at Furry Creek for 1 year and now in West Van for the last 6 months. Haven't played more than 5 rounds in the last 6 months (terrible, I played 100/year in Edmonton). Busy and no men's club to keep me at it. Just came down with the golf bug again after playing a few rounds and shooting my handicap...

What part of town are you in??

I'm in Burnaby, about a solid par 5 from Vancouver Golf Club :)

I changed careers in late spring, so I have not had very much chance to golf this summer. I had a very promising start this spring... but since then have not had very much chance to play.

I was able to get out to Northview and Morgan Creek a few times, but having been a 250 round per year player in the past... this year didn't cut it :(

Cheers, Allan

I know what you mean...I used to play 100 rounds a year until I moved to the North Shore from Edmonton (business start-up). 18 months and I might have 40 rounds in...5 in the last 6 months. I only started playing golf in my late 20's (36 now), but got down to an 8 handicap in 3 years of serious play, that's with no long iron play at all. Living on the 3'rd at Furry Creek for a year provided me with a free

driving range (the 3'rd Tee) to work on my long irons. I was surprised the last couple of games that although my short game became very rusty, the new developed long game (marginally better), allowed me to shoot my handicap. Now I'm officially down with the golf bug again...

    • Day 134 (26 Apr 24) - played Minnesott today, worked with the mid-irons and approaches (especially the 7i).  Scoring was a little higher, but I was focused on making the needed adjustments to the swing to achieve desired distances.
    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
