I've been playing golf (actually more like practicing) for about 5 months, almost 6 now. Within the last month i've been working hard on my long irons (3 and 4) since they were the worst of my iron shots; I've finally been hitting them very nicely however ive been noticing a trend in the past two weeks of my practicing at the range.

for the past two weeks I've been warming up by starting with my 60* and working up to my driver and then go to hitting my 4 and then my 3 for practice for about an hour. After I do my drills with my 3 and 4 and try to work my way back down to the shorter irons, i'll get to my 6 iron and then start SHANKING it... i mean shanking it non-stop for the rest of the bucket (160 in total about 40 remaining when i decide to go back down to the short irons and start shanking) ... i've been able to overcome the shanking once in the past two weeks in a practice session (out of about 8 sessions) and i've just shanked non stop for the last 40 balls for the other 7 sessions.. i'll stop hitting my irons for the last ten and then hit the driver without any problem just to relieve myself of the frustration..

regardless even while i warm up in the beginning b4 my shanking, I've noticed that my miss is a hook for my shorter irons that has become more frequent, however my 3 and 4 have been flying beautifully (it used to be the other way around)... also once i shank with the short irons i can't go back to the long irons because i just start shanking those as well...

so all in all i've been practicing for about an hr. 15 min sessions until I shank and then just shank 20 balls and spank the driver to get rid of the last of the balls since the shanking makes me want to cry...

please does anyone else experience this? when i go back to the range the next session i'll be totally fine and this has been repeating itself for the past two weeks... is it just because i'm getting tired or what?

any suggestions? Thank you in advance for any input..

Maybe your swooping at the ball on your way back down your irons, cause you start well, then after your done with woods you must be taking some of that swooping swing with you when you go back to iron play and are not hitting down on the ball anymore.

I find a good way to practice after a short warmup is I envision my home course and play it in my head, so you drive, then grab your 6I then do a pitch and then go to hole 2 and repeat. This helps because it makes you focus on the shot more and aim it in your head and get used to switching clubs cause unfortunatly you do not get 10 3 wood swings and then 10 6 iron swings, you get one of each. Make sure your gripping the iron nice and light too, its easy when your frustrated to over compensate your swing and also grip the club tight unknowingly. Take SLOW smooth swings, Save the extra 10 yards for the pros and hit it like you should, looking at your bag you have an extra stiff / extra long driver so you might be swinging the club WAY to hard.

Are you changing anything in your swing to hit the 3 and 4 iron? If you change things besides foot spacing and distance from the ball to hit those clubs, maybe you do the same thing in your swing when you go back to the short irons?

    • Day 76 (25 May 26) - Broke out the "vintage" clubs (MacGregor blades, Wilson 4150 laminates) to work with clubs that are much less forgiving.  Worked through the bag using hard foam balls for the full swings, regular balls for the chips and pitches.  Found it to be a more focused session on making consistent contact.
    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
