Well, Tiger is back and his swing is back, but it looks a bit different. I saw one comparison of 2008 and 2009 but not much to spot there, but from what I've seen on the course he seems to be in better balance and swinging softer and smoother. His signature shot is really sitting down and really pounding the ball, today he seems calmer and in more control.

I'm watching it right now and it definitely seems less 'violent' than it used to. Of course I haven't seen him really lay into one yet...

He definetly isnt swinging as hard as he used to. Perhaps he made the choice to dial it back a bit so he doesnt stress he knee as much or maybe he is just easing back into things and wants to make sure his knee is OK before he really starts pounding the ball again.
I honestly dont think he needs to really rip at the ball to be competitive. Right now, his driving isnt the problem, its his accuracy with his irons.
That will come back with time though. Id say that for how long he was away from golf, his game really isnt all that rusty.

I would definitely have to agree with the fact that he doesn't have the same squatting motion of previous years when he tries to rip one.

From what I saw, he seems to be turning it down a notch. He doesn't look so damn violent with his swings. He may be easing into the season, or preventing injury, or whatever, but I'd be curious to see if it works better than his older swing.

I like his new, very Haney, swing. Less up and down. Spine angle perfect throughout the swing. It is a tad technical and seems to lack some feel. He will evolve the swing as he gets more comfortable with it. This is the first season that I am rooting for Tiger. If he can overcome this injury mentally, physically, and emotionally, my memories of the young Tiger brat that said "second sucks" will be erased.

I am hoping his public persona will be more human that before. Can't stand the marketing generated comments of his past.

I did not watch the entire match, but did record it. The one thing that caught my eye was his posture on #15---the drive that went way right and out of bounds. He was standing upright, and his weight seemed to be back on his heels. I will put the tape on slow motion and see if I am right. If that is true, his shot would go to the right. On the other hand, Tim Clark's swing looked very good---excellent balance. He gets the club in a good position at the top, and does a nice job of acceleration through the hitting zone. He hit his iron shots on the back nine on the par 3's like lasers. From what I could see, he was really "on" his game. He has the reputation of being a good putter, and he definitely lived up to that, including the 67' bomb on #5.

tim clark was definitely on. tigers major flaw was his lack of distance control. he came up short several times, and his signature has always been being pin high. i do think he is in control of his swing for the most part, especially when he had to go back and hit 3 off the tee on that short par 4. on his reload, he knew what he had to do and he promptly put it on the green.

After changing his swing, or essentially making it a bit slower and less strength could make his normal distance calculations a bit off, including the fact that they are in the desert and the ball goes further.

What is really interesting is Tiger's swing is "flatter" in comparison to before. I am not saying he has a flat swing, just that he has flattened his out a bit. I believe this is one of the reasons some of you are noticing less of a squatting at the ball during the swing (even though he does still make a downward movement with his body).

If you watch his pre-swing practice, he is taking it back and then checking to make sure his hands and butt of the club are "out, in front of his chest," this allowing him to make that "haney" swing with the hands staying inside after impact. Todd Anderson at Sea Island teaches that same move. It really creates that post-up on your left leg during impact and follow thru (if you are a right hand player).
I would say watch his swing today, but T. Clark took care of that for us.

I am glad that I taped yesterday's exciting match so I can stop the action and use slow motion. You are right---we cannot watch Tiger today, but he may be back for Doral.

Is CBS airing anytime soon? We need to put Swing Vision and ProTracer on Tiger.

PEZ,
I am not a huge Tiger fan, but I do hope he comes back. I respect his game and love to watch his swing. that image helps me while I am practicing.

Of course it is good for the game as well.

I too was slow-moing him yesterday again and again to see his movements. very fun to watch.

    • Imma throw a dart in the dark as no one can tell what is happening once every fourth iron shot per your OP. This might sound counterintuitive but if ball position is too far back in the stance folks are known to throw down clubhead steeply. Could be happening. And yes, @billchaois not wrong; clubhead tends to bottom out wherever your pressure is. So slide forward (not sway), then hit.
    • Day 300 (!): did a stack session.
    • Day 24: Missed my weekly round due to a last minute little league makeup game this morning. Managed to get in some backswing rehearsals while grilling sausages for dinner, and then putted around the office/laundry room after dinner.
    • but I don't understand how that's possible you still want your head to stay back you don't want the upper body coming forward and plus I've tried feeling that and it made my fat shots worse and I then tend to pull and sky all my shots especially with driver because I get in front of it dont need force plates to see i finish on my left side
