Ok, Guys here is the task:

I have a close friend getting married this summer. Myself along with the guys attending his bachelor party would like to buy him a golf related gift as a "Congratulations".

His Brother and I have discussed getting him a new putter, since his current one was around during the Nixon administration. However, I worry about that since when it comes to putters, what one person loves the next person hates.

So the question, do we:

A) buy him a putter and tell him to feel free to exchange it for a different model,

or

B) buy him some other golf related item? Suggesstions appreciated.

If he's anywhere near serious about the game, how about a rangefinder or GPS? Something he's unlikely to get for himself but very high on the cool factor.

My personal choice would be that sweet new Leupold GX-1 that we're all hoping to win!

In David's bag....

Driver: Titleist 910 D-3;  9.5* Diamana Kai'li
3-Wood: Titleist 910F;  15* Diamana Kai'li
Hybrids: Titleist 910H 19* and 21* Diamana Kai'li
Irons: Titleist 695cb 5-Pw

Wedges: Scratch 51-11 TNC grind, Vokey SM-5's;  56-14 F grind and 60-11 K grind
Putter: Scotty Cameron Kombi S
Ball: ProV1

Couldn't agree more. A putter, more than any other club, is a very personal thing.

A GPS or range finder would be a GREAT gift. Pricey though. Good luck!

Driver: Nike Covert Driver

Irons: Mizuno JPX-825 Pro 5-GW

Cleveland Mashie 1, 2, 3, & 4 hybrids

Wedges: Mizuno MP-T4 Black Nickel 54* & 58*

Putter: Wack-e with super stroke grip

Ball: Titleist Pro V1X

Of the more expensive golf related gifts I would certainly apprechiate a range finder. Giving someone a club is as mentioned probably not the best idea. At least I like to buy those myself. Since there are a couple of you I guess the price won't be a problem.

A gift certificate on a golf shop perhaps, but maybe a bit unpersonal.

Depending on what you want to spend, how about a guy's weekend golf outing, or perhaps just a round at an expensive course he might not otherwise play? Gadgets are nice, but memories last.....

Thanks for the input guys.
I was thinking putter because he has a nice, new set of clubs with the exception of a putter.

Maybe a rangefinder or GPS is the way to go.

Dig up or thrift store purchase the ugliest, cheapest putter you can find. Wrap it up as nice as possible. After he opens it, hand him a gift certificate to his favorite golf store.

This way he can get anything he wants, including a rangefinder.

My buddy uses a $3 putter purchased from the Goodwill store a decade ago, we plan on burying him with it. Your buddy's current putter may be old, but it also may be irreplaceable to him.

    • Ah.. my regular weekend league. Lol Scrambles are fine. Usually there's charity involved. So there's that. There are much worse events Im forced to attend twice a year.
    • Does Justin Thomas have a massively underrated short game? It seems every time I look up he's hitting it close from a tough lie after short siding himself. What masterful touch
    • I freaking hate them. Too expensive, cheaters, food sucks, too dependent on weather, I keep telling myself never do it again but I'm a dummy
    • I enjoyed the A-B-C-D scramble we did at Kittyhawk before it shut down. Yes. The point was to meet the other members and get the season kicked off. Nobody took it too seriously. At least with that group, cheating wasn't a big issue.  As the D part of A-B-C-D, I enjoyed getting to play with one of the Association's top players. One year I played with the city champ. Man could he hit a ball.  It probably isn't something I'd want to do more than once a year, but it has its place.
