I'm a head case when dealing w/ putting.... I'll start off by saying that....

I have never really given a mallet style putter a thought, ever..... however, a recent trip to a golf galaxy had me just picking up a Taylor Made Itsy Bitsy spider mallet putter and I have to say I liked it! It was 33", which I like, and I thought it was a nice, comfortable, smooth, putter.....

I love the Scotty that I have, don't get me wrong.... but like I said, if I'm struggling w/ the Scotty for no other reason than whats going on between my ears, maybe a change of putters off and on can help at times?

Anyway, anyone have one of these? shot any of these? heard anything about them?

I'm basically looking for a mallet style putter, something different than the blade type that I normally putt with.... and the spider that I tried out was nice to me....

any other mallet suggestions?

Well I just bought a Yes! Hanna today-centre shaft mallet. I love it-although not been on course yet! Check out my post. I'd defo check out the Yes! offerings-as I said Im very impressed by their custom fitting set up

The other one I was going to look at was a Rife 2 bar. What sold the Yes! to me was having the fitting centre headquarters (UK) 30 mins from me. I wouldnt waste my time buying a putter off the shelf again

It's still huge by normal standards. I'd recommend the odyssey sabertooth, it was too soft for me but still really easy to line up. The nike ic's I really have to reccomend though. They're big, less expensive, and very easy to align.

I did hit it while I was looking for a new putter. My biggest issue with putting is alignment. I was impressed with how smooth and easy it was to align and sink putts. I didn't buy it in the end only because the Odyssey Teron putter beat it at longer distances for me personally. I had less missalignments with the Teron. Both had great speed and feel. I was hard pressed to not like it. It is a solid putter!

Someone here has to answer your question without suggesting some other putter. I have recently bought an Itsy Bitsy for that exact reason. I too have a blade style Scotty and I really like the look and feel of the Itsy Bitsy. The face feels nice and it isn't overly heavy. I do find the larger one a little more solid feeling at impact, but it's just too much club for this kid.

I do plan on starting the season with the Itsy Bitsy and leaving the Scotty at home. Just to change it up with the new season.

The mallets I like are both made by Odyssey: the #9 [calm down you Phil haters] & the Rossi.

A putter needs to be fit like anything else: Feel, shaft length, shaft position [heel or center]. You’d need to know where you usually miss the putt – pull or push
What shape of stroke you have: straight back & through, or an arc. I believe the mallets are best suited to the latter, which is nearly all of us.

Great post Quinn. I recently demoed the itsy, liked it.

QUOTE - I'm a head case when dealing w/ putting.... I'll start off by saying that....QUOTE nike_golf - I have a suggestion since you mentioned the "head case" issue in your original post. It is probably between your ears. A new putter is not going to fix anything. Since I read Rotella's putting book, my putting has increased by an order of magnitude. I now have so much confidence standing over a putt. IMO, you should give it a try. This forum seems to be filled with players thinking they can fix a part of their game with a new piece of equipment. When I start to think that, I ask myself this question, "What could Tiger do with this...?" or "Is it the arrow or the indian?" Might save you some money. Now, don't get me wrong, I have been descibed as an equipment junkie by people close to me. But, hopefully I change equipment for the right reasons.

Sorry if it seemed I was pushing another putter onto you. I was trying to give my opinion on the one you asked about. Since I didn't buy it, I felt providing a reason was necessary. It only came down to personal preference.

The spider putters are very nice putters.

Putters are just too individual for me to even try to recommend one over the other, so I'll stick with some general comments vis-a-vis blade vs mallet.

I putt with a Scotty Newport. I also have a mallet (older Zebra) that I break out every now and then when Scotty misbehaves.

I find the difference between the two types refreshing...... When my stroke is breaking down with the blade, the mass of the mallet seems to help me get back on track. A week or two in time-out is usually enough to get Scotty's attention and he tends to come back stronger than ever. Heck, just the threat of being left in the cabinet in the garage can be enough to break him out of a tantrum!

In short, swapping from one type to another works pretty well for me.

I'm not looking for a new/different putter because I don't think my current putter isn't as good..... its not that at all..... I just want a different putter for the mentality of shooting a different putter once in a while.... I know the point your trying to make, and yes, equipment can only do so much for you, because, in the end, the person has to put the ball in the hole....

I do the same thing. I'm not sure that its the putter that does it for me, as much as a different putter has a different feel a stroke, and switching them up forces me to focus a little more.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
