  1. 1. Which one should be more important to a beginner: power or accuracy?

    • Accuracy

I would have to say power over accuracy. If you look at the Fed Ex standings all the players hit it close to 300 yards, the shortest player is at 285 yards off the tee, a higher percentage of the tour players have to hit it well off the tee, so you don't see many 280 or 270 yards player too often win on tour.

Learn to bomb it first and fine tune the swing for accuracy later. I believe Jack Nicklaus philosophy also.

If I taught a beginner to swing like I do, he would get power and accuracy at the same time. They both depend on perfect timing and solid contact. Can he then increase his power even more? Maybe, by getting stronger and more flexible.

As I recall a number of players, including Tiger, say that they were encouraged to hit hard and freely early on, developing a rhythmical and efficient swing. Accuracy (swing plane etc) came somewhat later. Makes sense to me to develop the more athletic skills first and then fine tune the controls, but everyone's unique I suppose.
