Hi,

this may sound a sad question. But, I have relocated and am struggling to play regular rounds with my one golf partner-who cries off a lot. Any ideas where I can find new people to play golf with. Any standard-but similar to me would be best. Im in the UK. Are there any internet sites where people advertise??

Cheers

This may sound stupid but why don't you find a golfing partner on the golf course? Do you ever go to the course by yourself? If so, try and strike up a conversation about having to play solo and see what happens. You might find a new golf buddy. Also, what about this very site? I've met and played golf with some great people from the sandtrap.

If you want a website, try golfshake.
Not really used it so can't say how good it is, but it is for this purpose.

Being in the military, I have the exact same issue. My golfing partners retired and is transferring in July. I'll be going it alone unless I can find someone new.

That does sound sad.

From personal experience, hanging around the clubhouse, playing often and getting to know people works well. I don't know which system you use for playing, but here it's open for anyone to join a group of players who have registered for a game. I know it may sound annoying if you plan to play with a friend or two, but I have yet to play with an idiot. I mostly get to know a new person, if the person play often, we might bump into eachother again.

I´m really not the guy who makes contacts easy - but on the golf course, its just so simple (and we dont even have tee times, which makes meeting people even more easy). Just step up to the tee, ask if you can join and start playing. If you want to play again with your playing partners just ask, if not, have your drink at the 19th and bye bye...

Thanks, greaqt ideas. I'm not a shy person, but the whole meeting new folks to play with regularly is quite tough when you get to 30 plus. Im 33. In fact my buddy cancelled last Sunday on Saturday evening-and he just cancelled next sunday too. AGGGHHHHH. I still haven't used my new putter except for a few holes in the evening on my own.

As for playing on your own. Well, I do sometimes. But it's hard to take it as anything more than practice. You need the competition/shared experience and social interaction. Otherwise I start practicing, hitting extra balls, don't line up my putts properly. In any case, if I played a round on my own and hit 3 holes in one what would I do-if I told people they wouldn't believe me. Ok this is an extreme exagerration, the point is, you need someone to share the experience with to make it mean something.

I will try the suggestions. I'm not a club member at present, which is the big problem. As soon as I have some cash saved I plan to join a club-if I just played every weekend in the competitions Id be happy to play on my own for practice the rest of the time. In any case im sure within a club I'd meet people!

If anyone on here fancies a game anywhere in UK NORTH WEST AREA Im happy to meet up for a game! Just let me know-I don't smell, cheat, take ages, talk when you play your shot and am a generally decent fella obssesed with golf!

You cant use age as an excuse - you are younger than me and I am by far the youngest in the group I play with.

We all met by showing up at the course each weekend as singles. The starters were good about pairing people up on the weekend mornings. Our group has kind of been the one to pick up the strays - everytime someone moves out of town we seem to have someone who can jump right in. Even now there are 5 of us but most weeks someone has to take a week off so overall it seems to work well. It does help that we do not have any single digit handicaps in the bunch - we vary from a 13 to about a 40 - but as long as all keep up the pace - it really doesnt matter

Wasn't an excuse. Just giving my opinion. Where I live people aren't too friendly on municipals. If you just go up to people as a single guy and start talking they are likely to think you are odd or looking for trouble etc. I think this is daft myself, but unfortunately that's the way it is. All I meant was as a kid i used to play with all sorts, it's easier then and gets tougher with age. Thats not an excuse, just the way i see it. Now if you are in a club I think people are gonna be more trusting, plus they are generally more decent, articulate, knowledgable golfers. Plus you are all part of that club so sort of have that connection. On the municipals, without wanting to sound like a snob, a lot of the people I wouldn't want to play with. They would be lucky to break 200, don't know anything about etiquette, rules or even conversation! Some of them are just there for a game like I would be if I went bowling, the cinema or go karting-they aren't 'golfers' I know I'm sounding negative, just think it is quite tough to go to a local municipal and find a starnger on the first tee who is gonna be friendly and a good golf partner for you. Again thinkong back to my experience in the US-people seemed much more friendly in general there-I can imagine just hooking up with a stranger for a round over there no problem.

Anyway, Surefire thank you for suggesting GOLFSHAKE-it looks an excellent site. I have signed up and left an ad asking for golf partners in the North West UK. Looking at the older ads Im very positive.

Now I have entered the world of 'GOLF DATING'! Ha ha. I'd love to meet an gorgeous leggy blonde lady golfer who is a low handicap, happy to give me lessons and then go for a drink or two afterwards, then..............Im dreaming again!

Will do. Must admit I had never ever heard of craigslist until I saw someone mention it a few times on here. Since then I noticed it was in the news for a 'sex for sale' ads scandal. i dont think craigslist is that popular in Uk, it's more of a US thing. Having said that there are some adds for UK, in the Liverpool section. So worth a go, hey, it's free. thanks again for all the advice.

I may be a neanderthal but I wouldn't want her to be too much better than me. I couldn't take her playing from the tips and me playing from the middle tees.

Yeah but if she gorgeous and was willing to teach me, I'm sure I can have terrible problems with finding the correct posture and would require a more hands on approach.

The guys I play with regularly at the weekend I joined up with as a single a couple of years ago, and they asked me if I wanted to play with them again and we've been playing ever since. I'm going to be leaving here soon and have even lined up a replacement, a colleague of mine who's a member at the same club. I also play in competitions and have met loads of guys that way so that if I ever pitch up randomly I know enough people to be comfortable asking anyone if I can join.

In all seriousness I agree with your statement about playing with the right people being very important to your enjoyment and passion for the game. I use to played golf with an uncle that I also worked with, we played about every week. We would usually play fridays because we both had the day off and would play saturdays somtimes in addition. It was fun to be able to talk about golf at work and be able to tease each other and talk trash. Unfortunately my uncle passed away a few years ago and without having a regular playing partner I went from about 40 rounds a year to about 5.

Then I ran into a friend that I went to middle school with on the bus, I had played golf with him a couple times when he was just learning the game when we were in our early 20's (about 2 years earlier). We exchanged phone numbers about 3 months later he called me and asked if I wanted to play golf because him and his roommates had started a half a** golf league called the MGA (mediocre golf association) http://www.mediocregolf.com/Home.html . My first tounament had I think 7 people in it, but I had so much fun it reawakened my passion for golf. I have been a member now for 1 1/2 years and we have 32 golfers showing up for the start of the season (3-15-09). Now I am on golf forums and look forward to the start of the "MGA season".

I know many people that play golf would not find this type of league entertaining but for me it has transformed golf from a hobby to a passion. I don't know how this helps you in your quest for golf buddies but the search is worth the final reward.

Golf dating, LOL.

So instead of bro-mance, what do we call it?

Linksmance? A Link-up? My swing-buddy?

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
