Hey everyone.

Im looking to actually downgrade my clubs to less of a players club. I currently have Mizuno mp-60's and really liked them when I first got them but my swing isnt really where it needs to be to play these consistently.

About 2 years ago I reached my best scoring average which was at about a 10 handicap. Back then I would say that my ball striking capabilities where right at the mp60s level but now I've regressed due to lack of playing time.

I was looking at probably keeping the mp-60's but playing something else for a while so that golf can be fun for now. Basically a club that forgiving but still has potential to be a players club. Take into the account im coming from mp-60s...

I shoot in the high 80's now.

Here is what I was looking at, any suggestions welcomed.

Callaway x-22's, Callaway x-20, Callaway x-20 Tours, TITLEIST AP1. Any others?

Thanks!

Hey everyone.

I think the Mizuno MP 52's might still be in your range? That way you won't completely lose the feel of your Mizuno irons.

any one of those would be great for you. how about TaylorMade's? Out of the ones you listed, my choice would be either the X22's or the AP1's. but then again, its all up to you

I haven't hit the MP 52s but they sound like they might be right for you. I am in exactly the same boat. I was playing Cleveland CG2 player's irons last year. I did get down to low 80s with a few scores of 79. I went to the MX23s and LOVE them. Maybe try the MX25s, MX23s, MX200s? I personally feel the X series Callaways would be a little too much GI for you. I have nothing against the Callaways. Great sticks since the X12s!

i have demo'd alot of clubs recently, and I really like the MX line from Mizuno. Having hit the mp60 and mx25 back to back, I think you will be very impressed with the mx line and would suggest looking at them.

i hit the callaway x20's today and i honestly prefer the mx line from mizuno

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I've read in a lot of places how people that hit a lot of irons think the Wilson Ci7's are better than the ap2, x20, etc...

And less than $400 new.

I am planning on getting a set in a few weeks. I still play my first set, some forged chinese knockoffs, so hopefully the Ci7's get me on the low teens for a HCP as they will be much easier to hit.

Ok, I really do like Mizuno so their more GI oriented irons are definitely in the running now. From what I saw Im looking at either mx200 or maybe even sell the mp60's for the the mp52's.

Now Im confused :( . Are the mp52's much more forgiving them the mp60's?

Or stick with maybe the x22's and keep the mp60's....

I think you would benefit from a iron with a slight cavity with nice feel and workability. My suggestions for you would be the fallowing.

Callaway X22's- More forgiving than workable with little feel. (Cast) $700

Cleveland CG Red- Moderately workable, decent forgiveness, little feel. (Cast) $500

Mizuno MX-25- More Forgiving than workable with good feel. (Forged) $500

Mizuno MP-52- Slightly workable while being decently forgiving with great feel. (Forged) $900

Nike VR Splitback's- Very workable, surprisingly good forgiveness with great feel. (Forged) I went with these after hitting all these Irons I listed. In my opinion their feel and workability was unmatched. $900

Titleist AP2's- Very Workable, decent forgiveness and good feel. (Forged) $1000

Again, this is based on personal opinion. I am only giving you some options to consider.

x-20's are nice clubs, they look much nicer than the 22's and from what i hear they play relatively the same..

Hey everyone.

I think you are making a mistake.

MP-60s are fantastic irons. A great compromise for those wanting forgiveness in a players' (groan) iron. Players in a wide range of abilities should be able to play these and they don't look like something you attach to a tractor. If you sold them and moved to a chunky GI iron you'd be wishing you hadn't very quickly. The worst mistake I ever made was to go from a set of Titleist "players" irons to a set of mid sized GI irons. Affected my ball-striking considerably (in a very negative way) and I bought the MP-60s and love them.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Hey everyone.

Why is that a downgrade? I fail to see the logic.

If you are switching to clubs that better fit your game and help your score, that's an UPGRADE.

Gotta admit, that was my immediate thought too. You just beat me to it!

Anything that helps me score better is an upgrade to whatever it replaced. Style, manufacturer, color, price, manufacturing process, material, et.al......none matter a hoot next to those numbers in the little boxes.

JR what is your evaluation of the mp-60 just so I can see where it fits in.

I thought the MP-60 was a little more workable but a little less forgiving than the MP-52.

i agree, the Wilson Staff line has some really impressive clubs (Ci7, Di7, Pi7). i would take a look at those too. a lot of people forget about them but the Staff line is good stuff.

Yeah I know its not a downgrade. I just called it that because my game was much better a few years ago and these clubs fit my swing. Since my game has downgraded I'm calling it a club downgrade because the mp60's are not forgiving enough for my swing. I went from trying to work the ball to more trying to hit it consistently straight.

Im basically looking for a club that will be forgiving while Im playing less (so the game will be fun) but gives me headroom to be more of a players club down the road if/when Im able to play more.

Would it be safe to say the mp-60's are too similar to the mp-52's?

If so, I may look elsewhere. Maybe mx200's or x-22's..or (insert your suggestion here)

Thanks again for your replies....

I spent quite a bit of time testing the MP-52 and MP-57 models and really liked both. I ended up buying the MP-60's (slightly used for a great deal) once I realized that there was not a big difference between those 3 models. The 57 is 'slightly' more forgiving than the 60's and the 52 is a little more forgiving that than (but not that much). If you are wanting a more forgiving set, one thing you could do is purchase the longer irons from the MX-200 set and continue to use the shorter irons from the MP-60 set. You could have the lofts adjusted to fill gaps and this would be cheaper and maybe better in the long run than buying a set that you soon feel you've outgrown, but at the sametime providing more forgivness where you need it. Mixed sets like this are not that unusual these days. I am contemplating going with a 4-6 of either the MP-52 or maybe even MX-200's (maybe even MX-23/25) myself.

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
