I've always had problems with consistency. When my game was on, I played very well. When it was off, I couldn't hit a ball straight to save my life.

I'm undergoing a major swing change this spring in hopes to gain some consistency. I have a tendency to have too many moving parts in my swing so a buddy of mine told me to try the Stack and Tilt.

I'm still very new to it, but here's what I've gathered from it so far:

-Most of your weight never moves from the front half of your body
-Body doesn't move behind ball during backswing, arms swing slightly inside.
-During backswing, back leg stays straight.
-Turn shoulders down and around your body.
-Keep hands and shaft slightly in front of the ball both at address and during the swing.

I was working on this for a little bit but need some guidance as far as the keys to making this work. I've already noticed that I'm hitting more consistent. They aren't beautiful shots but they are consistent.

I've also noticed that this swing gives me a natural low draw (I'm lefty). I'm not sure if I'm leaning the shaft too much at address and closing the face or if I'm not releasing the club because it's a new swing.

Any help/tips would be appreciated.

EDIT: I also read that this swing is tough for amateurs because they already put enough weight on the front foot and have trouble swinging from the inside out.

That's exactly the opposite for me. I tend to hang back and swing from the inside naturally. When I try to move weight to my front foot, I top the ball. So I keep more weight on the back foot and I hit it fat. I could never find that happy medium.

My advice would be to find a pro who teaches it in your area and get them to go through it with you. It seems like the sort of thing that would be best worked through by someone who really understands the concepts and mechanics of the swing and especially as it relates to you which you won't get from DVDs or reading about it. I have a friend who uses the Stack and Tilt who was taught by a pro and he's seen the DVDs and says he couldn't have made the change if he'd just watched the DVDs. A teaching pro will make sure you're doing everything right and not misunderstanding anything you've read or seen.

I don’t like the Stack and Tilt. To me it looks like a reverse pivot.

I was watching the pros at Doral on TV yesterday, and the commentators were saying that the pros that tried the Stack and Tilt are abandoning it.

Only Mike Weir is still “trying to make it work”…

Go see your local PGA professional.

The stack and tilt guys say its the same if not more but I don't see the science behind it. I should say that I am biased though... I just don't like stack and tilt. I would much rather make a power pivot. Maybe that's just me though.

Stack and Tilt adventure
I am still new to golf. Being experienced with my own spending habits on new adventures, I waded into the internet for info on how to become better and found the Stack and Tilt method. I compared having no information on how to create a solid swing vs paying someone to teach me something that I may not be genetically capable of doing, and logically decided to teach myself so I could see if I wanted to continue playing this interesting game.
NOTE:I cannot compare "Stack n Tilt" to any other method.
I'm 45 years old, 6'-1" 250 pounds. I've only been playing since 11/08. I have no driver in my game yet, (starting late in life, I made the decision, to become more proficient with fewer tools before expanding.)

Before S&T;
3-iron was inconsistent, anywhere from 150 - 200 yards, and I lost about 6 balls per round, scores were in the 130's, and my foursome spent lots of time waiting on me.
After S&T;
3-iron now is a laser going 200-225 yards, havent lost a ball in 3 weeks, and happily I've broken 100 twice. The best part, is when I have to wait for someone else now. (p.s. Using an old 3-iron, and outdriving someone that used a $300 460cc "forgiving" driver is very fulfilling.)

After these results, and observing many others struggling with this game, I have decided to find an instructor that knows and teaches the S&T; method.

edit:BTW After extensive scouring of information on the web about this method, I have found no instances of injury, and the only people that are against it, haven't actually tried it.

It seems to me the stack and tilt is very inconsistent. I know a player who played very well with power pivot... switched to stack and tilt and played the best golf of his life for three weeks... then played the worst golf of his life with the same stack and tilt a few weeks later(he now is back to power pivot) It just seems too inconsistent, with the stack and tilt its very easy to make effective and solid contact.... but thats about it... I like the shorter backswing, but the thing is the pros that use it often are going to have unbelievable back problems when they get in their 70's :(

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
