No you are not! I never roll my ball out of the rocks and slot of times I take that lie on the cart path. Golf clubs are designed to be pounded into the ground and I pound them into the ground! The only time I take relief from rocks is if I can not advance the ball in a reasonable direction!

Do you ever get your loft/lie checked after you try and pulverize the asphalt/concrete?

My friend antagonizes (wow what a college word) me all the time because my clubs are scruffy. He's got all of his clubs nice and pretty and new, but it always seems like my "scruffy" clubs beat his "pretty" clubs by 5 or 6 shots.

I have no problems with what happens to my clubs in the course of normal play, or in being carried by myself or a cart. To me it comes down to vanity versus utility. Don't get me wrong, I like my stuff to look good. I keep it clean and am careful not to abuse it unnecessarily. But scratches and dings don't affect playability and that's what matters.

Actually, I once said "those were your balls" to my golf league partner. Had yanked one OB over highway on last hole (had some OB on holes previous), so proceeded stubbornly to continue to hit until I believe I was lying 9 in the fairway. He asked about my not seeming to care about losing golf balls that night --- at least he laughed when he realized I'd been reaching into his bag for the last three I hit out.

I'm a little anal about not getting marks or scratches on the top of my driver and woods, but let the chips fall where they may with my irons, they clank about in the bag (although I keep the grooves and face spotless while playing) and if they get some dings through play, I'm not at all concerned.

I don't mind normal wear and tear, or the unavoidable "didn't see that rock" mark.

But I paid a lot for my clubs, and I'm not a tour player so I'm not going to wrap my club around a tree, and I'm also not going to hit off gravel or a cart path in a casual round of golf. I would consider it in a tournament setting, but It just silly in my opinion.

I don't mind playing my clubs, but I guess I have a different definition of "abuse", and hitting off rocks or cement in a non-tournament round is included in that.

Way I see it, if I don't try it any time it's needed, then I'm probably not going to make a committed swing when I

do need it. I never want to get into the mindset that the tool is more important than the outcome. I can replace the tool, I can't take the round over.

You don't take relief?

Take care of your clubs and they'll take care of you. I've had these clubs for 2-3 years or so. Last year being the most used. I'd say 50-70 rounds last year alone. They get wiped and scrubbed on every shot. Always with a damp microfiber towel to assure no scratching. Call it OCD or anal or whatever. I just care about my sh*t. 3 years later...oh and notice where the groove wear is..SWEET SPOT! haha jk

Seriously! I keep getting asked where the 3-iron and PW are in my set. I bought my set 4-9, and then bought a FLI HI 3 and wedge PW. People tell me this will adversely affect the resale value of my clubs, to not have the full set. I can't imagine why this should affect which I purchase. Maybe - maybe - if an option on a car purchase affected resale value 10 years down the road, I would consider it, but not for golf clubs. Not unless I'm buying those super-expensive clubs with diamonds in the cavity.

yeah... I don't have a traditional set either by the 3-PW standard or ny the marketed Adams set... don't really care either as I plan to have them untill they are damn near wore out... iron technology isn't going to do much in the comming years for players irons, at least I suspect it won't.

I don't mind normal wear and tear, or the unavoidable "didn't see that rock" mark.

A wedge I will play if no legal relief is availablle... it is easy to replace... but I would probably move my ball off a rocky area of tree root and take a penalty even if I couldn't do so legally... unless playing in a tournament. This only happens maybe 1-2 times a year though, so...

Yeah I can see that, I just can't afford to replace my tools, so I don't take chances with them. To each his own.

to each his own. but the "tools" are expensive. a round of golf is not. and besides, its just a round of golf. one stroke isnt worth replacing a $100 forged iron. especially if they arent even made anymore

I use forged clubs so it's inevitable that they will get dinged up. I also don't care about scratches or nicks as I consider them battle scars. I do care, though, about keeping them clean. Dirty clubs are a different story.

I agree, irons are a part of your set that will get some wear and tear regardless... take care of them, but don't be obsessive.

With that being said, my putter is a different story. Don't get smart on me and say I must be doing something wrong if I'm putting dings on my putter, that's not what I mean... but it is becoming a little tarnished in a few places. Is there anyway to polish it up without messing up the finish? It's a red x by the way.

    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.

    • Day 32 (12 Dec 25) - What was the Friday shootout became a practice round due to lack of enough players (temps kept a lot of the regulars home).  Used it to dial in some playing distances as I played back a set of tees to force alternate club selections.  Plenty of long approaches - every club was put into action thru the course is 18 holes. Was not a GiR day but rather nGIR (5 up and down pars).  Pin placement was tough - the smallest miss would see the ball roll just as far past or even off the green.  Was a great day of battling what the course was dealing. Overall - I finished 5 strokes over my average score of 86.
