Hey guys I'm 14 and trying to attain a job at my local golf course. The reason I want this job is to pay for my own golf clubs and to work somewhere I love to be. I am currently writing up my resume for them. Also there is two courses I can apply to near me.

I will be applying for a Cart Attendent & Clubhouse Attendent or maybe a Driving Range Attendent. However I'll do any job they need me too.

So my real question is how should I increase my chances of getting the job? And what are the chances of me getting it? (I know you guys have no clue about the club, but it's just a public course in a small town in Wisconsin.) At one of the the courses it has a online application process, but If I were to go in and talk to the manager quick would It give a better impression? This is my first formal job and I would really love to be able to get it.

If you have ever gone through this process or have any tips for me please post here.

ABSOLUTELY go in and talk to someone face to face. Dress nice, give the guy a firm handshake, and look him in the eye. Say yes sir (or ma'am) and let them know that youre not afraid of hard work. Be confident! Thats just for starters, but Im telling you, these little things go a long way. Making a first impression is basically all you have when interviewing for a job.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to get a job as a cart attendant or driving the range picker because you need to be 16 or have a driver's license. I'm not sure if they can have you do other busy work or not, but it is worth the shot. I would recommend talking to the pro and seeing what is possible as a job. Sorry for the non interesting news.

The bigger issue I'd think is your age. At least in texas, you need to go get some special paperwork done if you want to work under 16 years of age.

One of my brothers friends was 15 when he got a job at one of the courses near me, but it's not the course I am applying too. Also I can get a work permit so I can work up to 40 hours a week in the summer in Wisconsin.

I don't know it if is legal for a 14 year old to work 40 hours a week. Plus I do not think you can work past 9:00 PM as well. Those were the rules when I worked at Kroger's in Ohio when I was 14. I could be completely wrong though. Good Luck.

Fill out the application then call as a follow up and ask if they'd like you to stop in and talk. Not sure what the cart/licence deal is in wisky, but you may get something like grunt work outside or being the resident b*tch. But its a good place to start.

Yeah, I didnt even go into the age thing, because I just figured if he was asking, it must be legal there to work when you are 14.

Definitely go in and talk to the manager who's going to be hiring you. He'll probably tell you to do the online app anyway when you come in, so I'd do it first, then go in and talk to him, just so he can put a face to the application and get to know you and your personality a little bit.

HOnestly, it is all about who you know. Networking man, networking. That is the reason I got my job, because I know one of the Pros there and he knew me well enough to trust that I will do a good job at the course. Definitely go in and talk to them and make a good impression.

Well I have two contacts with a pro and his wife, who both have taught me in school and the pro is my SS teacher at the moment. However he doesn't really work at the golf course by me, however his wife is the Girls High School coach so I could definitely put her as a reference.

Well, i do all three of the jobs you specified, and heres what i did when i got mine,

I went in and introduced my self to the person working the cash register hand shake etc, this way if the manager asks the register people what they thought of you, they have good things to says.

My boss said that he would call me in 3 days about if i got the job or not. on the 4th day, no call, so i called him so that it seemed i was intrested in my working there.

Only problem i see for you is your age. You cant drive golf carts until you are 16, and you definetly cant do the picker until you are 16. I actually had to wait two weeks from when i applied to when i could be hired because i had to wait for my birth day so i could turn 16. I assume this is true at all courses, as every golf cart says on it somewhere that you must be 16 to operate this vehicle.

Turns out I know the Manager's relative. (It's either his son or grandson I'm thinking.) I just applied, but It didnt ask for my age, so well see!

I'd say you have a good shot. Definitely go in and talk to whomever you can. Just based on the facts that you have posted looking for advice, have already researched the labor laws, etc. I can tell you have a good head on your shoulders and really are excited about the job. I would hire you.

Just follow-up and keep asking, I'm sure you'll get hired. I worked at a course from 10th grade through the year after college and it was the best job ever - then again I worked in the pro shop - first as a cart/range rat and then running the tee/taking money after a few years.

The most a job application can legally ask is if your are over 18 or not.

I started working at a golf course at the age of 14 as well. I was the "cart boy" working for minimum wage. I would clean the carts after the round and get them ready for play. After that was completed I was assigned trash can and water jug duty!!! fun times....

I was fired for playing golf instead of working one Sunday afternoon at the age of 15...HAHAHA
