This may sound a bit calloused, but I'm not sure this could have happened at a better time (except maybe November or so, but then the holidays are nearby), because the gap between the first and second majors of the year is so big. Tiger will have time to mourn and then time to get back into things by the time the U.S. Open rolls around.

My heartfelt condolences to the Woods family. I hope Tiger gets enough time to properly grieve then gets his butt back on tour and takes care of business.

The final round of the US Open is on Father's Day and this will be the first one that his father is not there. If Tiger plays, I for one will be rooting for him to win (I'm not the biggest Tiger fan, but I have my personal reasons). As far as a "better time", there is none to lose a parent! I just found out the day before Easter that my father (who introduced me to the game of golf and is still my favorite person to play a round with) has prostate cancer at age 59. Iacas, don't feel like I am ripping on your comments, I understand from a golf fan's perspective with the timing thing however Tiger may not care about majors during this time (nor should he). I still am unsure on how to react and feel and my father has a good prognosis (they found it early); I can't imagine what Tiger is going through. I'm glad that he is done suffering b/c he has been for a long time. I'm sure that Tiger has greived before hand but this is still a tough time for him and his family. Best wishes to the Woods.

The News Has Just Reached Here, I Didnt Realise Earl Had Passed Away Until Today As I Did Not See It On The News Over Here. Apologies For The Earlier Misunderstanding

Thoughts Are With The Woods Family At This Sad Time , Look Forward Too Seeing You Out There Again Soon Tiger As I Am A Big Fan And You Are A True Inspiration To Me

My wife pointed out that sometimes a person simply needs "permission" to die. They hold on until they see their one last friend or the birth of their newest grandchild or something, and then, shortly after that happens, they're gone.

I wonder if Earl was holding out, consciously or otherwise, for Tiger to play in one more Masters. The timing is weird: Tiger says he's going to go home to spend time with his dad, he does (other than the three days in New Zealand), and his dad dies. Earl, by most accounts, has been close to death for nearly a year.

I was thinking the same thing. Held on to watch his son play at Augusta one last time.

Future generations of Tour Pros will raise the bar even higher because of the generalisation of Earl Woods' teachings. Tiger was the primary beneficiary, others will follow.
Thank you, sir.
May you rest in peace.

I am not a parent...but I have lost my dad within the last year.
I kind of got misty eyed when I watched this thing on CBS sports about him and Tiger. I think he lived a better life as a proud parent then most could ever dream of. Can you imagine how proud he was of his son....to die knowing he was the absolute best golfer in the world and after Tiger's career is over the best ever?
He was a lucky man
