I agree. It's just that the only adjustment I go through with the various irons is in how straight up or bent down I stand, depending on which iron I use. Yet there is no difference for me in my swing plane between irons.

To have the same swing plane, the ball would have to be the same distance from your feet.  Do you play the ball the same distance from you feet for a PW and a 3 iron?  I'm not sure that's possible with a conventional set.

Is he reason you don't like recording your swing because in real life you look like your avatar? :-D

Yes, the ball stays the same distance from my feet when I use irons.  When I use a 3 iron I stand pretty vertical with no bend in my knees, and when I use my PW I am more bent over at the waist with knees slightly bent. If it's not possible then I either am doing it all wrong (which is very possible) or have accomplished the impossible

My avatar looks like an 85 -95 year old. I look my age, some people say I look younger. I don't look like an 85 -90 year old, at least not yet. Yet I use the avatar I chose so I won't have to select a new one 20 years from now :cobra:

I doubt you play the ball the same distance from your feet with different length clubs. You'd need to have upright long irons and flat short irons.

Most better players have almost the same posture with a wedge and a 3W. The variations are very small.

You should start a Member Swing thread, @9wood.

But I am not one of those "better playerrs" you refer to and I need to go with the set up I have found that works best for me at the moment

Hello everyone!

I'm a complete newby, and looking at single length myself. Main reason....my 9 iron is like a magic wand, but 7 on down is one nasty shot after another.

I've researched all of them; One Iron, Sterling, etc, but can't quite "swing" $900 right now. I've searched eBay for used and come close, but no luck yet.

All I really need (for now) is a 9 through 5 iron, or complete used set at a "used price". Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

***I'm new to this forum, so if looking for used equipment (here) is inappropriate, I apologize.

I picked up a set of 1Irons, 3-LW, a couple years ago and I love them! I love the consistent swing and confidence pulling out any of my clubs. I have no issue with club gapping as Ive read in the comments above, pretty static 10-15ish yards between clubs. Im still getting better and trying to nail down my club distances better, but Im never too far off when selecting a club. As for distance, my 3 is going around 215 and my 7 around 165. Not amazing but consistent contact is worth more to me at my level. They were a little tough to use at first as I had a crap swing, but I figured I could either be fit for my crap swing or get fitted for proper swing physics and work into it.

I haven't used their woods or driver, mainly because I had a 9* driver I often ballooned and couldn't bring myself to hit a 12*. And fairway woods are the devil...

Thanks for the reply.

Since posting the request for a used set, I've purchased a 5-sw set of new "Pin Hawk" heads, bent to 9 iron lie. I then had my local Dicks S.G. install shafts and oversize (1/6) grips.

They ended up about 7 iron length, which didn't accomplish what I was after due to the lie angle (and the fact that I suck with 7 iron length and up), so had then cut them down to 9 *no charge*.

Much better, but now those shafts are too stiff (original cut being for the 7 length), and can't get in the air good with the longer ones, so one more trip for softer shafts and I should be good.

For those saying "if it worked, all the pros would do it"....

I'm new to golf but now have a summer of playing under my belt, and I can tell you for sure these single length irons have made my first year "very tolerable". Had I been stuck hitting longer irons there wouldn't have been any point in going. *** I *** can't hit a good long iron (at least not yet), but my drives are decent and my short game is quite good for a newby, so this is an excellent option for me. The pros don't NEED them.

PS, I should add that the "Dicks SG" guy (Mike Gallaway) was awesome, and the length thing was my fault not his.

    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
    • Like others have said, get fitted. Since 2011, I have played some combination of 4W + 7W. I had a Cobra 3H and 4H a couple of years back, and would swap out the 7W for a 3H in cold months (keep out of cold wind, and rough thinner for wayward drives.) The 7W matched up with yardage often with 3H; the current 4H goes almost as long as 7W, but has a lower trajectory. 4H also bumped out 4i in last bag redo; I learned to hit stinger with 4H so that's my driving iron on tight holes with shallow landing area. Again, a side-by-side test will tell you which way to go. If 5W or 3H is meh, keep the 7W. Also, are you looking to replace the 7W with a 5W or 3H, or add a second bridge club (5W or 3H) to your bag?
    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
