I dont know about you, but I'm freezing my patookus off up here in NYC. Plus I got this new Taylor Made driver and am sick of hitting into a net at Chelsea Piers. Whaddya say we all fly somewhere for a couple days and play? How bout Vegas? or Myrtle Beach? Or Alabama? Hey Eric! What would it take for the powers at be to organize a Sand trap Outing?

Not much, actually - we can do it. Somewhere with cheap flights and decent hotels, I imagine. I'd be up for it... anyone else stuck in the cold want to see what we can do?

...besides...summer is Vegas and Utah! I'm talking about a month or so from now;)...OK maybe 5 weeks;)

Yeah, I'm not waiting until summer either. In the summer I've got my own darn club to play.

It's gotta be more than Jay and myself that are interested. Two more, pony up!

Flights and hotels would be quite a bit more expensive there, n'est-ce pas?

I have lived in Birmingham for 40 years and noticed that there was some interest here in potentially playing on the Robert Trent Jones golf trail.

If anyone would like to plan such a trip - I will be happy to help.

About me:

1) I have played the game for 40 years.
2) Handicap index of 8.1.
3) Have traveled extensively and played golf all over US.
4) My next trip is to Scotland in June to play: Turnberry, Muirfield, St. Andrews (ballot), North Berwick, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie.

Advantages of coming to Birmingham to play all or part of an Alabama golf trip:

1) Robert Trent Jones Trail is internationally respected.
2) According to Golf Digest, there are actually higher rated public access courses (than RTJ) across the state and in the metro Birmingham area. Therefore, combining a well planned trip that includes these courses, with the RTJ courses, makes a super trip.
3) Inexpensive Airfares on the largest carriers: Southwest Airlines serves the city. This means you can fly here for $200 - $250 if you buy a ticket two weeks out - roundtrip. Also served by Delta, American, NWA, USAir and United. Non-stops from NY, Chicago, Philly, Detroit, Vegas, Phoenix, etc. Fly major carriers for less.
4) I can arrange a variety of accommodations from Hilton/Marriott on down to whatever your budget will bear.
5) There are very good restaurants and spas in the area. I can connect you to these.

In any event - good luck here and let me know if I can assist.....

Great offer! I may have to take you up on that when the fall and winter roll around again, though that's bound to be the pricier season, no?

Eric - there is no "tourist season" here as you have in Florida. The prices stay the same year round.

As for the weather, you guessed it, you want to avoid the middle of the summer. It's hot as hell and I do not play in the afternoons in July and August. It's just too hot. The very best times to play here are between September 20th and November 10th. And between Mid-April and June 1. Both of these are very good because they combine good weather with good golf course conditions and beautiful colors. Looks at the Master's on TV and you will see the same colors here that you see there. And those of you who live in the Northeast who have a beautiful Fall in September will see the same thing here in mid October to early November. We have subfreezing temps in mid-winter so the fairways go dormant. But we have bent grass greens on 90% of the courses and these are thriving in the Winter. Therefore, we play very actively in the Winter time and enjoy it. The tees are overseeded with Rye.... An alternative for the Snow Birds would be to come down in March, when you are still having cold weather. The courses are starting to green up and the weather will be in the mid-60's to low 70's at that time. Gives you a chance to warm up your game right before your own season cranks up. You have to visit here to see the natural beauty. I am a member of a private club and can see 11 miles from the first tee.... http://www.shottalk.com/gallery/disp...&cat;=0&pos;=-24 All of the courses I would put you on - have similar beauty to what you see on the link above. BTW - FYI the Robert Trent Jones Trail is opening its first resort property here on a course that has been designed for PGA tournaments. It will open in June. The course has been ready for play since September but they have kept it closed waiting for the new Marriott to open... http://www.rossbridgeresort.com/?cid=goo A few restaurants I could put you in.... Thanks for the info. I'll have to check it out next fall... I hope you're still an active participant here. Perhaps we'll host our "Blogger Cup" or "Sandy Cup" down there then.

BTW, I've got no problems if people want to start threads for meet-ups. Just title them something like "Late August Chicago Get-Together" or something so people know the two important things: when and where.

If anyone is ever in northwestern PA and wants to play a FINE course (see my sig), just let me know. I'm also willing to do some travelling if anyone wants to hit up a course within about 3 hours of me.

Hey Flap, I'm in Atlantic City from 7/25 - 8/3 and over the weekend - 30/31 - I am looking for something to do. I could easily drive up to Long Island if you could get a time on the Black. Would love it. Let me know if you are interested. Brett

    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
