I am a bit surprised that Chad is leading the Masters. Granted, it is only the first round. However, here is what I mean: he has always been a good ball striker (and the Tour stats reflect that---GIR, for example), but only an average putter---he currently ranks 64th in putting.

Augusta National requires certain skills: familiarity with the course; excellent iron play; ability to make the rights decisions, given the swirling, tricky wind; excellent putting. Chad's putting rank makes it unlikely that he will continue to contend.

And I like the guy. He quietly "gets the job done", and reminds me of Hal Sutton---quiet, from the South, excellent ball striker, but an average putter. Hal never did that well in the Masters, either.

the only reason he is leading is because of that unbelievable start (birdieing the first 5) and it is unlikely that he will do anyting similar to this!

64th ranked putter on tour.....64th best putter on tour......perhaps he's make some minor adjustments that have vaulted him ahead this week. He was certainly in the zone yesterday.

what I find funny is that the people at the top of the leaderboard are on nobody's list of people that will win: Hunter Mahan, Shingo Katayama, Aaron Baddely is up there, and especially Chad Campbell. Granted, not everyone with the first day lead wins, but still. Tiger's not looking that great. It looks like Chad Campbell has the greens worked out on this course and he looks like he can continue doing good for the next 3 days. Now im going towards Jim Furyk here. He is at a solid -4 and he is a great ball striker, not to mention he has been good at putting lately. I'd keep an eye on Jim Furyk.

You are right. He did have an amazing round---5 straight birdies at the beginning, a great deuce at #12 where he stuck his tee shot close to the pin, followed by 3 more in a row!! Then, he started to think about 63, the magic number----it is the lowest score ever made in a Major by any one. Result: bogies on #17 and 18. MORAL of the story: stay focused on one shot at a time and forget score. All the top mental coaches (including Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott) say that over and over again---"think about the present shot or putt, and nothing else." Sure, like that is easy.

I thought it was interesting that Chad Campbell was on top after round one, and Michael Campbell was at the very bottom of the leaderboard. How often does the same last name pop up in exactly those two spots?

OK, I'm from the south so I claim license to say "what a disgusting redneck". Why does the PGA insist on long pants but it's alright for this moron to spit all over the course?

Chad Campbell has as much a chance of winnint the Masters as me, 0. Gotta love his rhythmic swing.

He may fade and not win the weekend (although those early round big leads can very helpful come Sunday, just ask Immelman), but it's interesting to watch what he could be doing to the cut line. Another birdie or two and a lot of people sitting on +1 right now could find themselves out.

I think he actually has a much better shot than you... hell, I bet Gary player has a better shot than YOU!

I think the last few years have proved than ANYONE can win... they just need to have their game come together at the right time... and Chad looks pretty good so far, so does Furyk... we'll just have to wait and see. I certainly won't take the road that many here have taken and say Chad can't do it.

I noticed that too... I'm just glad it's not the other way around as I like Chad, but Michael does nothing for me. It was bad enough watching him in the US Open a few years back.

Chad seems like a real nice guy, but yeah... the habbit is pretty nasty and I'd rather not see Boo and Chad dip or chew on the course. That being said... I'd gladly watch either of those guys win the Masters.

wow. he is at it again. He is rounding amen corner right now so you can watch it on masters.com. I was not expecting such a strong showing today.

He better get low enough to cruise in on Sunday. As we all know the Master's is won on Sunday.

He just bogeyed 11.

the 10 stroke rule only works to add people, not take them out of the weekend. It is X number, plus anyone within 10.
